꿈을 이룬 새로운 ‘별’ … 시드니 정 변호사 이야기

A New Star Who Achieved Her Dream … The Story of Attorney Sydney Jung

스스로 ‘빛’을 발하는 젊은 영혼은 아름답다. 자신이 하는 일에 대해 큰 자부심을 가진 사람은 얼굴도 반짝반짝 빛이 난다. 시드니 정(Sydney Jung)을 처음 만났을 땐 새내기 변호사로서의 풋풋함 정도만 상상했지만, 이야기를 나누는 순간 이내 그녀의 매력 속으로 빠져버렸다. 예쁘고 가녀린 겉모습만으로는 가늠하기 어려운 단단하고 당찬 그 에너지가 빠른 속도로 전해져왔다.

그녀는 라스베이거스에서 태어났고, 단 한 번도 외지에서 살아본 적이 없다. UNLV에서 정치학과를 거쳐 로스쿨까지 마쳤고 변호사 자격증을 취득했다. 시드니는 그녀의 어린 시절에 대해 “저는 어릴 때부터 호기심과 탐구심이 유난히도 강해서 모든 활동에 참여하며 불확실성과 도전을 두려워하지 않는 법을 배웠어요. 매일 1%씩 발전하는 목표를 세우고 열정을 쏟았죠. 물론 성공하지 못하는 경우도 있었지만, 나에게 어떤 것이 가장 적성에 맞는 지를 찾아내고 내 미래를 결정하는 중요한 계기가 되었습니다.”라고 회상했다.  

그녀에게 변호사라는 놀라운 기회를 열어준 시간은 이미 고등학교 3학년 때부터 시작되었다. 한 로펌에 인턴십 과정을 지원해서 합격했고, 그 작은 기회가 그녀의 인생을 바꿔 놓았다. “무조건 열심히 하고 싶은 생각밖에 없었어요. 면접 때 제게 맞는 정장이 없어서 어머니 옷을 입고 갔죠. 너무 긴장했지만 제게 기회가 주어졌고 그 곳에서 법률 보조원으로 시작해서 사무 관계자, 비서까지 다양하게 경험하게 되었습니다.” 시드니는 그 때 법률에 관한 일이 본인에게 상당히 잘 맞는다는 결정적 깨달음을 가졌다. 그녀는 “로펌 내에서 성장하면서 일찍 진로를 결정하고 UNLV 윌리엄 S. 보이드 로스쿨을 우수한 성적으로 졸업했다. 

그리고 운명처럼 파트 타임으로 시작했던 그 로펌으로 변호사가 되어 돌아왔다. 시드니는 마이클슨 로펌(Michaelson Law)에서 상법과 상속에 관련된 분야를 전문으로 다루고 있다. 그녀의 이야기를 듣는 동안 일관되게 느껴지는 그녀의 삶의 플랜들이 감탄을 자아내게 했다. 그녀는 새내기 변호사이지만 날카로운 열정과 따뜻한 정서를 동시에 지녔다. “세월이 흘러도 제가 만난 고객들은 그들의 이야기를 특별하게 기억하고 싶어요. 단순히 파일 속 사건으로만 묻히기를 원하지 않아요. 저의 초등학교 5학년 담임 선생님이 모든 학생들의 이름과 특징을 기억하고 있듯이 저도 닮고 싶습니다. 그녀의 선생님은 그녀가 베가스에서 나고 자랐고, 베가스 안에서 변호사의 꿈을 이룬 것을 무척 자랑스러워하며 후배들을 위한 강연 자리도 마련해 주었다고 한다. 

베가스 내의 여러 젊은이들을 만났을 때 나름 성공한 이들은 반드시 부모와의 관계성이 탁월하다. 정서적인 안정이 많은 젊은이들에게 끼치는 긍정의 힘이 그들의 내면에 공식화되어 있다. 시드니도 부모에 대한 애정이 각별하다. “사람이 누릴 수 있는 큰 복 중의 하나는 어떤 상황에서도 항상 곁에서 나를 지지해 주는 사람들이 있다는 것을 깨닫는 것입니다. 저는 항상 부모님을 롤모델로 생각합니다. 어머니는 ‘공감’이란 거창하거나 눈에 띄는 것이 아니라, 사랑과 연민으로 이끌어주며 매일 함께해 주는 것이라 가르쳐 주셨어요. 아버지는 부지런함과 절대 포기하지 않는 법을 몸소 보여주셨죠. 꿈을 이루시는 모습을 보며 자란 것은 저에게 엄청난 특권이에요. 제가 가진 모든 것이 만족스러웠고 행복했기에 저는 더 큰 것을 바라지 않고 베가스에서의 소박한 삶을 지킨 것이 제 미래의 열쇠가 된 것 같습니다.” 

똑똑하다, 야무지다, 예의 바르다, 예쁘다… 좋은 느낌의 형용사들을 잔뜩 붙여주고 싶은 한 사람. 오늘 그런 ‘샛별’을 만났다.

   There is something beautiful about a young soul that shines with its own light. People who take deep pride in what they do seem to glow from within. When I first met Sydney Jung, I expected the freshness of a young attorney just beginning her career. But the moment we began talking, I was immediately drawn into her charm. Beneath her delicate and graceful appearance was a strong, confident energy that revealed itself almost instantly.

Sydney was born and raised in Las Vegas and has never lived anywhere else. She studied political science at University of Nevada, Las Vegas before attending law school and earning her law license. Reflecting on her childhood, she shared, “I was always extremely curious and eager to explore new things. I participated in every activity I could and learned not to fear uncertainty or challenges. I tried to improve myself by even one percent every day. Of course, not everything worked out, but those experiences helped me discover what truly suited me and ultimately shaped my future.”

Her path toward becoming an attorney began as early as her senior year of high school. She applied for an internship at a law firm and was accepted — a small opportunity that would ultimately change her life.

“At the time, all I wanted was to work hard,” she recalled. “I didn’t even have a proper suit for the interview, so I wore my mother’s clothes. I was incredibly nervous, but I was given a chance. I started as a legal assistant and later gained experience in administrative and secretarial roles as well.”

It was during that time that Sydney realized the legal field was truly the right fit for her. She continued to grow within the firm environment, committed herself early to her career path, and graduated with honors from the William S. Boyd School of Law. As if by destiny, she eventually returned to the very same law firm where she had once worked part-time — this time as an attorney.

Today, Sydney practices at Michaelson Law, focusing on business law and estate planning. Throughout our conversation, what stood out most was the remarkable consistency and intention behind the plans she had built for her life. Though still a young attorney, she possesses both sharp ambition and genuine warmth.

“Even as time passes, I want every client I meet to feel remembered,” she said. “I never want them to become just another file or case. My fifth-grade teacher remembered every student’s name and personality, and I want to be that kind of person too.”

Her former teacher, proud that Sydney was born and raised in Las Vegas and fulfilled her dream of becoming an attorney in her hometown, even invited her to speak to younger students as a role model.

One thing I have noticed about many successful young people in Las Vegas is the strength of their relationship with their parents. Emotional stability often becomes a quiet but powerful force in shaping their inner confidence and direction. Sydney is no exception.

“One of the greatest blessings in life is realizing that there are people who will always stand by your side no matter what,” she said. “My parents have always been my role models. My mother taught me that empathy isn’t something grand or dramatic — it’s about guiding people with love and compassion every single day. My father showed me the value of hard work and perseverance. Watching my parents pursue their dreams has been an incredible privilege for me. I was content and happy with what I had, and I think choosing to embrace a simple life in Las Vegas became the key to my future.”

Smart. Thoughtful. Graceful. Polite. Beautiful. She is someone who inspires countless positive adjectives. Today, I met a rising star.
