네바다 부주지사 스타브로스 앤서니(Stavros Anthony)는 라스베이거스 경찰청, 네바다 고등교육 위원회 위원, 라스베이거스 시의원, 그리고 현재 네바다 부지사로서 지역 사회 봉사와 공공 안전에 주력해 왔다. 앤서니는 2002년 네바다 고등 교육 시스템의 4년 임기 이사로 선출되어 두 번째 임기를 역임했고, 이사회 의장으로서 앤서니는 마스터 플랜, 시스템 목표 및 가치 선언문 개발을 주도했다.2009 년 앤서니는 라스베이거스 시의회에 선출되어 세 번의 임기를 역임했다.그는 또한 그 중 7년 동안 임시 시장으로 재직했다. 앤서니는 2022년 네바다 부지사로 선출되었다. 

그동안 본 매거진은 공직자들과 다수의 인터뷰를 진행했는데, 앤서니 부주지사만큼 적극적이고 성의있는 답변은 처음인 듯하다. 한인 커뮤니티를 존중하는 그의 예의에 경의를 표한다. 

Q: 네바다 토박이로서 이러한 배경이 당신의 리더십 스타일에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가. 

A: 40년 넘게 네바다에 거주하면서, 제 리더십 스타일은 네바다주의 다양성, 회복력, 그리고 기업가 정신에 깊이 뿌리내렸습니다. 법 집행 기관, 네바다 주 의회, 라스베이거스 시의회, 그리고 현재 부지사로서의 경험을 통해 저는 리더십은 지위가 아닌 봉사라는 핵심 신념을 더욱 굳건히 다졌습니다. 네바다 주민들은 독립심과 혁신성뿐 아니라 공동체 의식으로도 유명하기 때문에 열린 대화와 새로운 아이디어를 존중합니다. 진정한 개방성이 지속적인 발전을 이룰 수 있습니다.

Q: 법 집행 분야에서 오랜 경력을 쌓으셨는데, 라스베이거스의 현재 공공 안전 상황과 주요 과제에 대해 어떻게 평가하는가.

A: 베가스의 성장과 엄청난 확장은 공공 안전에 대한 흥미로운 기회와 복잡한 과제를 동시에 안겨줍니다. 오늘날 라스베이거스의 치안은 양호한 편이지만, 개발 도상 지역은 비상 대응, 인프라, 지역 치안 유지에 대한 새로운 요구를 제기합니다. 교통 관리부터 사이버 보안, 그리고 공중 보건에 이르기까지, 법 집행 기관과 응급 구조대원들이 새롭게 부상하는 문제들에 앞서 나가는 데 필요한 자원, 훈련, 그리고 기술을 확보하는 것은 여전히 ​​최우선 과제입니다. 공공 안전 기관, 주민, 그리고 기업 간의 신뢰와 파트너십을 유지하는 것 또한 중요합니다. 라스베이거스에서 이러한 협력은 우리의 가장 큰 강점 중 하나입니다. 시 공무원부터 지역 협회에 이르기까지 지역 지도자들은 안전한 공동체는 공동의 책임을 통해 구축된다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 법 집행 전문가들의 경험과 지역 사회의 창의성을 결합함으로써 가장 역동적인 도시로 만들 수 있다고 확신합니다.

Q: 팬데믹 이후 아시아계 인구가 빠르게 증가하고 있다. 아시아계 공동체를 지원하기 위해 국가 차원에서 어떤 정책적 노력이 이루어지고 있는가.

A: 아시아계 미국인 및 태평양 섬 주민(AAPI) 공동체는 네바다주에서 가장 빠르게 성장하는 인구 중 하나로, 특히 새로운 사업체, 지역 사회, 그리고 산업이 자리 잡고 있는 남부 네바다주에서 두드러지게 나타났습니다. 네바다주는 인허가 절차를 간소화하고, 자본 접근성을 확대하며, 기업가들을 멘토링 및 인력 프로그램과 연결하는 친기업 정책을 지속적으로 추진하고 있습니다. 이러한 노력은 레스토랑, 기술 스타트업, 전문 서비스 업체 등 어떤 사업을 시작하든 초기 사업주들이 사업을 시작하고 성공할 수 있도록 지원하기 위해 마련되었습니다. 

Q: 아시아 중소기업 주인들이 직면한 가장 큰 과제는 무엇이며, 이를 해결할 수 있는 해결책은 무엇이라고 생각하는가.

A: 제 오피스에서는 아시아계 미국인 및 태평양 섬 주민(AAPI) 사업주들이 서류 작업이나 번거로운 절차가 아닌 고객 서비스 제공과 일자리 창출에 집중하기를 바라는 이야기를 자주 듣습니다. 그렇기 때문에 가장 시급한 과제 중 하나는 비용과 지연을 유발하는 관료주의적 장벽을 해소하는 것입니다. 인허가 및 규정 준수 절차를 간소화하고, 중복되는 규정을 줄이며, 사업주들이 더욱 명확하고 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 정보 채널을 구축하는 것은 큰 변화를 가져올 수 있습니다. 또 다른 과제는 자본과 자원 확보입니다. 많은 소기업주, 특히 신용 이력이나 네트워크가 부족한 1세대 기업가들은 자금 조달에 어려움을 겪습니다. 소액 대출, 기술 지원, 멘토링 프로그램, 특히 상공회의소 및 지역 경제 개발 기관과의 협력을 통해 제공되는 프로그램에 대한 접근성을 확대하면 이러한 격차를 해소하고 신규 사업주들이 자신감 있게 사업을 확장할 수 있도록 지원할 수 있습니다. 그리고 소기업주들이 정책 입안자들과 직접 소통할 수 있는 창구를 확보하는 것 또한 중요합니다. 

Q: 네바다의 생활비 상승은 한인 가정을 포함한 많은 가정에 재정적 부담을 주고 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위한 구체적인 해결책이 있는가.

A: 수십 년 동안 우리 주는 관광 산업에 크게 의존해 왔습니다. 관광은 필수 산업이지만, 이로 인해 가족들이 경기 침체에 취약해집니다. 앞으로 나아갈 길은 ‘다각화’입니다. 기술, 첨단 제조업, 재생 에너지, 물류와 같은 산업을 유치하고 지원함으로써 모든 네바다 주민의 기회를 확대하는 더 높은 임금과 더 안정적인 일자리를 창출할 수 있습니다. 더욱 강력하고 다양한 경제는 비용 상승의 영향을 상쇄하고 장기적인 재정 회복력을 확보하는 데 도움이 될 것입니다. 이러한 노력의 핵심은 인력 투자입니다. 직업학교, 견습 과정, 직업 중심 자격증을 포함한 고품질 교육 및 훈련 프로그램은 주민들이 미래 직업에 대비할 수 있도록 준비하는 데 필수적입니다. 가족들이 더 나은 취업 기회를 얻을 수 있을 때, 주택, 의료, 교육에 대한 부담도 줄어들어 진정한 경제적 안정을 구축할 수 있습니다.

Q: K-POP 열풍은 라스베이거스에 상당한 경제적 이익을 가져왔다. 하지만 일각에서는 한인 사회에 대한 지원이 상대적으로 부족하다는 주장을 한다. 이러한 우려에 대해 어떻게 생각하는가?

A: K-POP의 세계적인 성장은 라스베이거스에 엄청난 흥분과 경제적 이익을 가져다 주었습니다. 이러한 콘서트와 문화 행사는 호텔과 레스토랑을 가득 채울 뿐만 아니라, 우리 도시를 국제 무대에 올려놓고 전 세계 방문객을 유치합니다. 관광청장으로서 저는 이러한 기회를 계속 확대해 나가고자 합니다. 제 오피스는 네바다에 더 많은 K-POP 공연, 축제, 그리고 한국 문화 행사를 유치하여 라스베이거스가 한국 엔터테인먼트와 문화의 주요 명소가 되도록 지원할 준비가 되어 있습니다. 저희는 한인 커뮤니티 지원을 위해 소기업 프로그램, 멘토링 프로그램, 그리고 성공적인 벤처 창업과 성장을 지원하는 주 정부 자원 활용을 통해 한인 기업에 힘을 실어주는 데 주력하고 있습니다. 또한, 네바다의 경제 다각화를 주도하는 신흥 산업, 즉 기술, 제조, 무역 분야와 한국 기업가 및 투자자들을 연결하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

Nevada Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony has built a distinguished career in public service and safety. He served as a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer before being elected in 2002 as a Regent for the Nevada System of Higher Education, where he led major planning and policy efforts. In 2009, he joined the Las Vegas City Council, serving three terms and spending seven years as Mayor Pro Tem. In 2022, he was elected as Nevada’s Lieutenant Governor.

Our magazine has conducted many interviews with public officials, but few have been as responsive and sincere as Lt. Governor Anthony. We commend his respectful and thoughtful engagement with the Korean American community.

Q: As a longtime Nevadan, how has your background shaped your leadership style?

A: Having lived in Nevada for over 40 years, my leadership style is deeply rooted in the state's diversity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit. My experiences in law enforcement, the Nevada Legislature, Las Vegas City Council, and now as Lieutenant Governor have reinforced my core belief that leadership is about service—not status. Nevadans are known for their independence and innovation, but also for their sense of community. That’s why I prioritize open dialogue and respect for new ideas. True transparency fosters continuous progress.

Q: With your extensive background in law enforcement, how would you assess the current public safety situation and major challenges in Las Vegas?

A: Las Vegas’s rapid growth brings both opportunities and public safety challenges. While the city remains generally safe, expanding areas require stronger emergency response, infrastructure, and law enforcement support. Prioritizing resources, training, and technology for first responders is essential. Building trust among agencies, residents, and businesses is key—and one of Las Vegas’s greatest strengths. By combining law enforcement expertise with community creativity, we can make Las Vegas even more dynamic.

Q: The Asian population has been growing rapidly post-pandemic. What policy efforts are being made at the state level to support the Asian community?

A: The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is one of the fastest-growing populations in Nevada, especially in Southern Nevada where new businesses, neighborhoods, and industries are emerging. Nevada continues to promote pro-business policies that streamline licensing processes, expand access to capital, and connect entrepreneurs with mentoring and workforce programs. Whether it’s a restaurant, tech startup, or professional services firm, these initiatives are designed to help new business owners launch and succeed.

Q: What are the biggest challenges facing Asian small business owners, and what solutions do you propose?

AAPI business owners often tell us they want to focus on customers and job creation—not paperwork. Removing bureaucratic barriers, simplifying licensing, and providing clear information are key priorities. Access to capital is another major challenge, especially for first-generation entrepreneurs. Expanding microloans, technical support, and mentoring—through local partnerships—can help bridge this gap. It’s also crucial to give small business owners direct access to policymakers.

Q: Rising living costs in Nevada have placed financial burdens on many families, including Korean American households. What concrete solutions do you propose to address this issue?

A: Nevada has long depended on tourism, but economic stability requires diversification. By growing sectors like tech, manufacturing, and renewable energy, we can create better-paying, more stable jobs. A stronger economy also means greater resilience against rising costs. The foundation of this strategy is workforce investment—through education, apprenticeships, and career training—so families can access better opportunities and achieve real economic security.

Q: The K-POP phenomenon has brought significant economic benefits to Las Vegas. Yet some argue that support for the Korean American community remains lacking. What are your thoughts on this concern?

A: K-POP’s global popularity has brought energy and economic benefits to Las Vegas, boosting tourism and international visibility. As Lieutenant Governor, I’m committed to expanding Korean cultural events and making Las Vegas a hub for Korean entertainment. We also support Korean American businesses through mentoring, state resources, and by connecting entrepreneurs with Nevada’s growing industries like tech, manufacturing, and trade.

Q: Lastly, what vision or message would you like to share with the Korean American community living in Nevada?

A: Korean residents in Nevada have contributed significantly to our economic growth, cultural vibrancy, and civic life through hard work, innovation, and a strong sense of community. Their leadership in business and civic engagement is essential to ensuring Nevada remains a hub of prosperity and innovation. My vision is one of continued partnership. Together, we can not only grow tourism through more K-POP concerts and cultural exchanges but also promote Korean talent and entrepreneurship on a broader scale. I want the Korean community to know that they have a dedicated ally in me. My door is always open, and my commitment to collaboration is unwavering. Nevada’s future is bright, and it will shine even more because of the passion, dedication, and spirit of the Korean American community. Together, we will build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nevada for future generations.
