참혹한 전쟁이 한반도를 삼켰던 한국전쟁이 어느덧 75년이나 지났음에도 불구하고, 한반도는 여전히 휴전 상태이다. 이런 불안정한 상태도 고착화되다보면 위기감은 점점 사라지고 마치 정전이 된 것 같은 착각도 고착화된다. 이러한 수면 상태를 일깨워주는 장치는 생생한 전쟁의 참상을 기억하는 참전용사들의 존재이다. 이 또한 위기감에 봉착한 것은 생존해 있는 그 분들이 이제 얼마 남지 않았다는 것. 라스베이거스에도 10여 명 안팎의 참전용사들이 살고 있다. 그들은 은퇴 후에도 계속 한국 참전 베테랑스 모임을 이어가고 있다. 특히 한인 커뮤니티의 모임에는 빠짐없이 참석한다. 

지난 7월 8일(월), 라스베가스 IPEC 센터에서는 한국전쟁 발발 75주년을 기리는 기념행사가 성대하게 열렸다. 이번 행사는 한국전 참전용사들의 숭고한 희생을 기억하고, 그 정신을 되새기기 위한 의미 깊은 자리였다. 미군 참전용사들이 깃발을 들고 장내로 입장할 때 오랜 세월이 지나간 그들의 주름살과 강인한 눈빛이 마음을 압도했다. 왠지 모를 뭉클함이 가슴을 스쳤다. 그들은 전쟁 이후에도 한인들에게 깊은 애정을 가지며 그들의 지나간 기억을 승화시켰다. 

*그들의 희생에 감사하는 성대한 자리 

라스베가스 한인회(회장 김항호)와 재향군인회 미 남서부 라스베가스 분회의 공동 주최로 마련된 이 날 행사에는 약 300명의 한인 동포와 지역 주민들이 참석해 자리를 함께했다. 참석자들은 한 마음으로 전쟁의 아픔과 평화의 소중함을 되새기며, 경건한 분위기 속에서 참전 용사들에게 깊은 감사를 표했다.

이번 기념식에는 미군 한국전 참전용사 9명과 한국군 참전용사 7명, 그리고 참전 용사의 미망인 3명이 직접 참석해 현장을 빛냈다. 특히 고령의 연세에도 불구하고 행사장을 찾은 미망인들에게는 참석자들의 경외하는 마음이 가득했다. 또한, 캘리포니아에서 온 대한민국 6.25 참전유공자회 미서부지회 소속 한국군 참전용사 5명과 미국한국전참전용사협회(KWVA) 소속 미군 참전용사들의 당당한 모습은 참석자들에게 깊은 감동을 안겼다.

김항호 회장은 환영사에서 “참전용사들께서 점점 연로해지시고, 안타깝게도 많은 분들이 우리 곁을 떠나셨다는 사실이 더욱 마음을 무겁게 한다”며 “이번 기념식이 생존 참전용사들과 고인들을 위한 소중한 헌정의 자리가 되기를 바라는 마음으로 정성을 다해 준비했다”고 전했다. 이어 “이 뜻깊은 행사를 가능하게 해주신 모든 분들께 진심으로 감사드린다”고 덧붙였다.

이날 행사에는 네바다 주 부주지사, 연방 하원의원, 주재 보훈영사 등 미 주류사회의 주요 인사들도 참석해 참전 용사들의 공헌을 기리며 헌화와 기념사를 전했다. 라스베가스 지역의 여러 한인 단체장들과 동포사회 지도자들도 함께해 한국전쟁을 기억하고 평화의 메시지를 나누는 뜻깊은 시간을 함께했다.

남서부 분회 라스베가스 재향군인회 정한수 회장은 “한인회장과 함께 한국전쟁 75주년을 맞아 머리를 맞대고 진지하게 고민했어요. 베가스에서 특별하고 역사적인 행사를 해보자는 결의를 다지고 백방으로 뛰었습니다. 많은 분의 성원과 도움으로 멋진 기념식을 완성하게 되었습니다. 이번 행사를 계기로 조국과 한인 커뮤니티가 더 발전하기를 바래봅니다.”라고 전했다.

Although 75 years have passed since the outbreak of the Korean War—a devastating conflict that engulfed the Korean Peninsula—the war has never truly ended. The peninsula remains in a fragile armistice, not peace. Over time, this prolonged instability has become normalized, dulling the sense of urgency and leading many to mistakenly believe that a true peace was achieved.

In this state of collective amnesia, it is the living presence of war veterans that jolts us awake. Their stories, memories, and sacrifices serve as vivid reminders of the horrors of war—and the price of freedom. Yet, even this living testimony is at risk of fading. The number of surviving veterans continues to dwindle. In Las Vegas, only around ten Korean War veterans remain, and they continue to meet regularly, preserving their shared legacy. They also remain active members of the Korean American community, rarely missing a cultural or memorial event.

On July 8th, a solemn and moving ceremony was held at the IPEC Center in Las Vegas to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. The event served as a heartfelt tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought, and a powerful reminder of the values they upheld.

As the American veterans entered the hall carrying flags, the room fell into respectful silence. Time had etched deep lines on their faces, but their resolute expressions and unwavering dignity left a lasting impression.

These veterans have transformed their painful memories of war into lasting bonds with the Korean community, maintaining a sense of connection, compassion, and purpose that extends far beyond the battlefield.

A Grand Tribute to Their Sacrifice

The Korean American Association of Las Vegas (President: Hangho Kim) and the Korean Veterans Association Southwest Chapter co-hosted a solemn and meaningful event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. Held at the IPEC Center on July 8, the ceremony gathered approximately 300 attendees, including Korean American residents and members of the local community. Together, they reflected on the painful legacy of war and the enduring value of peace, offering heartfelt gratitude to the veterans who had made it possible.

The ceremony honored the presence of 9 U.S. Korean War veterans, 7 Korean veterans, and 3 widows of fallen soldiers. Despite their advanced age, the widows’ attendance moved many, who responded with deep respect and admiration throughout the event.

Also present were 5 veterans from the Korean War Veterans Association Western Chapter in California and several proud members of the U.S.-based KWVA (Korean War Veterans Association). Their dignified presence and unwavering spirit left a lasting impression on all in attendance.

In his welcoming remarks, President Hangho Kim acknowledged the increasing rarity of these moments, saying, “As the years pass, it becomes more difficult for our veterans to attend events like these. Sadly, many are no longer with us, which makes this occasion all the more meaningful. We prepared this ceremony with great care to honor both the living and those we have lost.” He added, “I am deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible.”

Dignitaries from the broader American community, including the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, a U.S. Congressman, and the Korean Veterans Affairs Consul, also participated in the ceremony. They laid wreaths and delivered commemorative speeches to express their respect for the veterans' sacrifices. Local Korean American leaders and organization heads were also in attendance, strengthening the bonds of remembrance and reaffirming a shared hope for peace.

Jung Han-soo, President of the Korean Veterans Association Southwest Chapter in Las Vegas, stated: "In collaboration with the Korean American Association, we carefully planned this event to mark the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. Determined to host a meaningful and historic ceremony in Las Vegas, we worked diligently to bring it to fruition. With the generous support of many individuals, we were able to successfully hold this memorable event. I hope it contributes to the continued advancement of both our homeland and the Korean American community."
