유타의 푸른 정취 ‘세인트 조지의 하루’

Utah’s Serene: A Day on St. George

라스베가스의 화려함을 뒤로하고 차를 달려 북동쪽으로 두 시간 남짓, 사막의 빛깔이 조금씩 바뀌는 길 끝에 세인트 조지(St. George)가 모습을 드러낸다. 붉은 바위와 푸른 하늘이 서로에게 기대듯 맞닿아 있고, 바람은 묵묵히 시간을 깎아내며 도시의 얼굴을 빚어왔다. 처음 이곳에 도착했을 때, 마치 오래된 사진 속으로 들어온 듯한 착각에 빠졌다. 화려함 대신 담백한 일상, 번잡함 대신 고요한 온기가 흐르는 곳. 세인트 조지는 그렇게 천천히, 그러나 깊이 마음속으로 스며들었다. 베가스에서 멀지 않은 곳에서 동부의 푸른 향기를 느낄 수 있는 세인트 조지. 보물 같은 새로운 여행지이다.

  이 작은 도시가 자이언, 브라이스 캐년 등의 대자연으로 가는 길목임은 누구나 알지만, 실제로 이 도시 안에서의 여행을 하는 관광객은 많지 않다. 하지만 현지인이 추천하는 시티 타운(City Town)을 방문하면 소박한 여행의 예쁜 길이 우리를 안내한다. 특히 10월이 여행의 최적기이다. 파이오니아 공원(Pioneer Park)을 중심으로 시청, 교회, 미술관, 레스토랑, 부티크 호텔 등 볼거리가 많다. 파이오니아 공원은 짙은 초록 잔디와 나무가 가득하고 붉은 사암 위로 흐르는 시냇물 같은 작은 폭포들이 시원함을 안겨준다. 오래된 벽돌 건축물들이 벽화와 함께 공원을 장식한다. 베가스에서의 건조함이 시원하게 씻겨 나간다. 다운타운 바로 옆의 붉은 사암 바위 지대에는 도시 전경을 내려다볼 수 있는 포인트와 트레킹 장소도 있다. 

다운 타운은 그리 넓지 않기 때문에 걸어서 한 바퀴를 돌 수 있다. 정취가 물씬 풍기는 앤티크 샵도 구경하고, 예쁜 레스토랑도 유난히 많다. 특히 추천하는 레스토랑은  카페 필러브(Cafe Feellove). 프랑스풍의 앤티크 베이커리로 샌드위치와 튀긴 피터 브레드가 일품이다. 가격이 상당히 저렴해서 부담없이 브런치를 즐길 수 있다. 이 레스토랑이 있는 장소는 작은 숲속과도 같은 풍경이어서 또다른 세상에 와있는 느낌이 든다. 작은 정원 한가운데에 매우 오래된 작은 오두막이 있는데, 여기가 ‘Bee’ 아이스크림샵이다. 테이블 2개가 전부인 공간인데, 노란 벽화 앞에서 아이스크림을 먹으면 마치 동화 속에 들어온 듯하다. 조지 코너(George’s Corner) 레스토랑과 레드 포트 퀴진 오브 인디아(Red Fort Cuisine of India)도 맛집으로 소문나 있다. 최근에 한국식 바베큐와 샤브샤브 레스토랑도 만나볼 수 있다. 

다운타운에서 가장 유명한 명소는 단연 세인트 조지 유타 성전(St. George Utah Temple). 1877년에 지어진 상징적인 건축물이다. 브리검 영 겨울 별장(Brigham Young Winter Home & Office)도 꼭 둘러볼 만한 명소. 딕시 센터(Dixie Center)는 콘서트, 전시, 연극 등 각종 공연과 행사가 열리는 지역 대표 컨벤션 공연장이다. 

다운타운의 밤을 즐기고 싶다면 타운 중심에 있는 더 어드베니어(The Advenire) 부띠끄 호텔을 추천한다. 깔끔하고 고풍스러운 룸과 옥상에서 낭만적인 수영을 즐길 수 있다. 야경 감상은 보너스!

바람도 시원한 10월이다. 이 가을에 가장 잘 어울리는 유타의 작은 도시로 휴식을 누려보자. 

Leaving behind the glittering lights of Las Vegas, I drove northeast for a little over two hours, where the colors of the desert gradually shifted, and at the end of the road, St. George revealed itself. Red cliffs leaned gently against the endless blue sky, while the wind, patient and quiet, carved time into the face of the city. When I first arrived, I felt as though I had stepped into an old photograph. Here, brilliance is replaced by simplicity, and bustle gives way to a quiet warmth. St. George seeped slowly yet deeply into my heart. Just a short distance from Las Vegas, it carries the fresh, green fragrance of the East. It is a hidden gem, a newfound treasure of a destination.

Most travelers know this small city as a gateway to the great wonders of Zion and Bryce Canyon, but few take the time to explore the city itself. Those who do, especially by visiting the heart of the town, soon discover the charm of a modest yet beautiful journey. October is the perfect season to experience it. Pioneer Park lies at the center, surrounded by city hall, churches, museums, restaurants, and boutique hotels. The park is filled with deep green lawns and shaded trees, while small waterfalls cascade over the red sandstone, offering a refreshing coolness. Old brick buildings adorned with murals frame the park, creating a nostalgic harmony. The dryness of Las Vegas seems to be washed away here. Just beyond downtown, the red sandstone hills provide trails and viewpoints where the city unfolds below—a place where both stillness and adventure await.

Downtown isn’t very large, so you can easily explore it on foot. Along the way, you’ll find antique shops full of charm and an unusually high number of delightful restaurants. One especially recommended spot is Café Feellove, a French-inspired antique bakery where the sandwiches and fried pita bread are exceptional. The prices are very affordable, making it a perfect place to enjoy a casual brunch. The café is set in a location that feels almost like a small forest, giving you the impression of stepping into another world.

In the middle of a little garden nearby stands a tiny, very old cottage, which is home to Bee’s Ice Cream Shop. With only two tables inside, it’s an intimate spot, and enjoying ice cream against the backdrop of its cheerful yellow mural feels like stepping straight into a fairy tale.

Other popular local favorites include George’s Corner Restaurant and Red Fort Cuisine of India, both well-loved for their flavors and atmosphere. More recently, you can even find restaurants offering Korean-style barbecue and hotpot, bringing a wider variety of tastes to this charming desert town.

The most iconic landmark downtown is without a doubt the St. George Utah Temple, an architectural treasure built in 1877. Another must-see is the Brigham Young Winter Home & Office, a historic site rich with stories of the early pioneers. For concerts, exhibitions, theater, and community events, the Dixie Center stands as the region’s premier convention and performance venue.

If you’d like to experience downtown after dark, stay at The Advenire, a boutique hotel in the heart of the city. With elegant, vintage-inspired rooms and a rooftop pool perfect for a romantic evening swim, it’s an ideal place to relax. The sparkling night views are an added bonus.

October brings crisp, refreshing breezes, making it the perfect season to savor this small Utah town. St. George offers the kind of restful charm that pairs beautifully with autumn.
