The Return of Chris Lee: Justice with Compassion

너무나 유쾌한 변호사를 만났다. 눈이 크고 부리부리해서 강하게 느껴지던 크리스 리(Chris Lee)변호사는 대화를 나누는 순간 기자의 마음은 새털처럼 가벼워졌다. 오랜 기간 판사를 역임해 왔기 때문에 ‘근엄’이란 단어를 떠올릴 수밖에 없었지만 진지하면서도 유쾌한 신참 변호사를 마주하며 즐거운 인터뷰 시간을 가졌다. 

그의 이력은 매우 화려하다. 클라크 카운티 지방검찰청에서 7년간 검사로 근무하며 살인, 성폭행, 유괴, 강도 등 중범죄를 다루었다. 특히 특별범죄수사부에서 가정 폭력, 음주운전 전담팀에서 수석 검사로 활약하기도 했다.

이후 네바다주 남부 지역 부국무장관으로 근무하며 투자사기, 금융범죄사기 등 경제범죄 수사를 지휘했다. 그 후 그는 판사로 17년을 활약했다. 정의와 인간적 회복이 공존하는 사법의 새로운 방향을 제시하며 지역 사회의 신뢰를 받아왔다. 크리스 리 판사는 노스라스베이거스 CARE 법원을 창시하였는데, 최초의 치료, 재활 법원으로 지역사회 중심의 회복적 사법 모델을 제시한 선구적 사례로 평가받고 있다. 

크리스 리 판사는 현재 미국 공군 소령직을 겸하고 있다. 넬리스 공군 기지 소속 참모법무관으로서 군사재판의 검사로도 활동했다. 이러한 그의 군 복무 경험은 ‘재향군인 치료 법원’을 창설하는 성과를 거두었다. 그는 PTSD(외상 후 스트레스 장애)로 고통 받는 베테랑들에게 치료와 회복의 기회를 얻을 수 있는 시스템을 만들었다. 이 과정을 이수하면 그들의 범죄 기록을 말소해 주고 새생활을 찾을 수 있는 기회를 부여했다. 헨더슨 베테랑 비영리재단의 Mac 회장은 “크리스 리 판사는 베테랑을 위해 매우 헌신적인 판사였다. 항상 친절하고 진심으로 베테랑들의 회복을 위해 애썼다.”고 회상했다. 

그의 지나온 생에서 알 수 있듯이 그는 불우한 사람들을 회복 시키는 과정에 몰두했다. 흔히 출세한 사람들이 자신의 주변을 돌아보며 약자를 위해 헌신하는 일은 쉽지 않다. 자신의 명성과 이득을 위해 움직이는 경우가 허다하다. 그의 이력은 화려하기도 하지만 일관된 ‘정의’의 노선을 그려냈다. 이런 그의 선한 영향력이 어떻게 이어질 수 있었을까?

그는 말한다. “공부를 하고 직업을 선택할 때부터 사람들에게 도움이 되는 길을 택하고 싶었어요. 제가 어릴 때 아버지가 한의사셨고,어머니는 약사이셨어요. 이민자들의 삶이 그렇듯 저희 부모님도 어렵게 정착하시며 불이익도 많이 당하셨죠. 그래서 저에게 더 그런 성향이 커지지 않았나 생각해 봅니다.”

그는 베가스 토박이로 넬리스 공군기지에서 군복무도 이어갔고, 20년 가까이 베가스 법조계에서 지대한 업적을 이루었다. 그는 클라크 카운티 역사상 최초로 선출된 아시안 판사이며 당선 당시 미국 최연소 한인 판사로 주목 받았다. 그는 CSN 대학교에서 형사법을 강의하면서 “법은 단지 규제가 아니라 사람을 변화시키는 도구가 되어야한다.”며 윤리적인 법조인의 길을 강조했다. 

크리스 리 판사는 이제 새로운 길에 도전한다. 변호사로서 한인 커뮤니티에 더욱 가까이 다가왔다. 현재 Soro & Roger, Attorneys 로펌에서 업무를 시작했다. 그는 “한인들의 권익을 보호하기 위해 최선을 다하고 싶습니다. 그리고 불우한 환경으로 인해 학대를 받거나 법적으로 어려움에 처한 청소년들을 위한 변론도 적극적으로 할 계획입니다.”라고 포부를 밝혔다. 

정의와 회복, 그리고 인간에 대한 따뜻한 시선을 잃지 않는 크리스 리 변호사. 그의 여정은 직업을 넘어, 한 사람의 삶이 세상에 어떤 울림을 줄 수 있는지를 보여주는 귀한 이야기로 남는다. 그의 진심 어린 미소 속에는 여전히 ‘정의는 사람을 치유한다’는 믿음이 깃들어 있었다. 이제 그는 또 다른 이름으로, 법정의 따뜻한 등불이 되어 우리 곁으로 다가오고 있다.

It was a delight to meet such a remarkably cheerful attorney. With his large, keen eyes, Chris Lee initially gave a strong and serious impression. Yet, the moment the conversation began, that intensity melted away, and the interview turned into a lighthearted, enjoyable exchange.

Given his long tenure as a judge, one might expect an air of solemnity, but Lee’s warmth and humor quickly set a comfortable tone. Behind his easy smile, however, lies an extraordinary career devoted to justice, integrity, and community.

Lee’s professional background is nothing short of impressive. He spent seven years as a prosecutor with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, handling major felony cases such as homicide, sexual assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery. He later served as Chief Deputy Attorney General for the Southern Nevada region, leading investigations into investment and financial fraud.

His next chapter was on the bench — 17 years as a judge, where he earned deep respect for promoting both justice and human restoration in the legal system. Lee founded the North Las Vegas CARE Court, the region’s first treatment and rehabilitation court, which became a pioneering model for community-based restorative justice.

In addition to his judicial service, Lee continues to serve as a Major in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, working as a Judge Advocate (JAG) at Nellis Air Force Base. His military experience led to the creation of the Veterans Treatment Court, designed to help veterans suffering from PTSD find healing and recovery through structured treatment programs. Upon successful completion, participants can have their criminal records expunged, offering them a chance to rebuild their lives.

Mac, chairman of a veterans’ nonprofit in Henderson, recalled, “Judge Chris Lee was deeply dedicated to veterans. He was always kind, sincere, and truly cared about their recovery.”

Throughout his career, Lee has been drawn to helping the vulnerable and restoring broken lives. In a world where personal gain often outweighs compassion, his consistency in choosing the path of justice stands out. When asked where that commitment comes from,

he smiled and said:

“From the time I chose my career path, I wanted to do something that helps people. My father was an oriental medicine doctor, and my mother was a pharmacist. Like many immigrant families, my parents went through tough times and faced unfair treatment. I think watching that shaped who I am.”

A Las Vegas native, Lee has spent nearly two decades shaping the city’s legal landscape. He made history as the first Asian judge ever elected in Clark County — and, at the time, was recognized as the youngest Korean-American judge in the United States.

He also teaches criminal justice at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), often reminding students that “Law is not just about regulation; it is a tool to transform lives.”

Now, Lee is taking on a new challenge — returning to private practice as a bridge to his community. He recently joined Soro & Roger, Attorneys, where he plans to focus on representing Korean-Americans and advocating for youth facing hardship or abuse.

“I want to protect the rights of Korean-Americans,” Lee said. “And I also hope to defend young people who are victims of difficult circumstances, helping them find a second chance.”

With his unwavering sense of justice, compassion, and humanity, Attorney Chris Lee’s journey is more than a career — it’s a living testament to how one person’s integrity can inspire and uplift an entire community. In his gentle smile remains the belief that justice heals people — and now, under a new title, he continues to be a warm light within the courtroom and beyond.
