3월 7일, 네바다주 라스베이거스에 위치한 University of Nevada, Las Vegas(UNLV)에서 재미 한인 과학기술자협회 네바다 지부 창립총회가 열리며 한인 과학기술 커뮤니티의 새로운 출발을 알렸다. 이번 창립총회는 네바다 지역의 한인 과학기술인들이 공식적인 조직을 갖추고 협력과 교류의 기반을 마련했다는 점에서 의미 있는 이정표가 됐다.

이번 총회를 통해 네바다 지부가 공식적으로 설립됨에 따라, 그동안 지부 설립을 준비해온 창립위원회의 역할은 마무리 단계에 들어가게 됐다. 앞으로는 보다 체계적인 운영을 위해 집행위원회(Executive Committee)를 신속히 구성하고, 프로그램·회원관리·웹관리·선거관리 등 다양한 분야의 상임위원회를 설치해 조직 운영을 본격화할 계획이다.

창립총회에서는 각 연구 분야별 창립회원들이 서로의 전문 분야를 소개하며 네트워크를 형성하는 시간도 마련됐다. 서로의 연구와 활동을 이해하는 과정을 통해 네바다 지부의 첫걸음을 보다 안정적이고 탄탄하게 시작하자는 취지다. 창립총회 준비위원회 위원장 조호권 교수는 “네트워크의 구축을 통해 여러 분야를 아우르며 서로에게 정보 공유라는 참여를 통해 회원들의 적극적인 협력이 이루어질 때, 한인사회에도 이바지 할수 있는 길을 여는 것이 우리의 큰 목표이다.”라고 강조했다.

이번 네바다 지부 출범은 라스베이거스와 네바다 지역에서 활동하는 한인 과학기술인들에게 중요한 전환점이 될 것으로 기대된다. 연구소, 대학, 기업, 의료기관 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하는 과학기술 전문가들이 하나의 네트워크로 연결됨으로써 연구 협력, 차세대 인재 양성, 지역사회 기여 등 다양한 활동이 가능해질 전망이다.

*50년 전통의 글로벌 과학기술 네트워크

재미 한인 과학기술자협회는 1971년 12월 11일 워싱턴 D.C.에서 69명의 한인 과학기술자들이 모여 창립한 단체다. 당시 초대 회장은 김순경 박사가 맡았으며, 협회는 한미 양국의 과학기술 발전을 연결하는 가교 역할을 목표로 출범했다. 현재 Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association(KSEA)는 약 3만 명의 등록 회원과 7천 명 이상의 활동 회원을 보유한 미주 최대 규모의 한인 과학기술 단체로 성장했다. 2025년 7월부터 2026년 6월까지 제54대 회장단이 협회를 이끌고 있다.

지난 50여 년 동안 협회는 한미 양국의 과학기술 교류 확대는 물론, 미주 한인 사회의 과학기술 관심 확대와 차세대 인재 지원에 크게 기여해 왔다. 특히 과학기술을 전공하는 한인 학생들과 젊은 연구자들에게 멘토링과 네트워크 기회를 제공하며 미래 과학기술 인재 양성에도 힘쓰고 있다. 뉴욕에서 참석한 권오봉 교수는 “네바다주 학생들을 대상으로 경시대회 및 다양한 교육 이벤트를 통해 차세대를 위한 재능 육성사업에 더욱 힘을 쏟을 계획이다.”라고 밝혔다. 

*미주 전역으로 확장된 협회 조직

KSEA는 현재 미국 전역에 약 70여 개의 로컬 지부를 두고 있으며, 대학 중심의 22개 차세대 지부, 그리고 33개의 과학기술 전문단체와 협력 네트워크를 형성하고 있다. 협회의 대표적인 행사로는 매년 개최되는 한미 과학기술 학술대회가 있다. 이 행사에는 매년 1,000명 이상이 참석해 학술 발표와 토론, 창업 경진대회, 취업 박람회, 포스터 발표 등 다양한 프로그램이 진행된다. 2025년에는 Atlanta에서 열린 UKC에 1,200명 이상이 참가했으며, UKC 2026은 2026년 8월 5일부터 11일까지 Orlando에서 개최될 예정이다.

Nevada Chapter Emerges as a New Hub for the Korean-American Science & Technology Community

On March 7, the inaugural meeting of the Nevada Chapter of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) was held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), marking a new beginning for the Korean-American science and technology community in Nevada. The event represented a meaningful milestone, as Korean-American scientists and engineers in the region formally established an organization to build a foundation for collaboration and professional exchange.

With the official launch of the Nevada Chapter, the role of the founding committee—formed to prepare for the establishment of the chapter—has now come to a close. Moving forward, the organization plans to quickly form an Executive Committee to ensure structured operations, while also establishing several standing committees, including Program, Membership, Web Maintenance, and Nominating/Election committees.

The inaugural meeting also provided an opportunity for founding members from diverse research fields to introduce their professional backgrounds and areas of expertise. The session was designed to help members better understand each other’s work and build a strong network, ensuring a stable and promising start for the Nevada Chapter.

Professor Hokwon Cho, chair of the founding organizing committee, emphasized the importance of collaboration.

“We hope to build a network that connects professionals across various fields. Through active participation and information sharing among members, we aim to contribute meaningfully to the Korean-American community,” he said.

The launch of the Nevada Chapter is expected to become an important turning point for Korean-American scientists and engineers working in Las Vegas and across Nevada. By connecting professionals from universities, research institutes, corporations, and medical institutions, the new network will open opportunities for research collaboration, support for the next generation of scientists, and meaningful contributions to the local community.

A Global Science and Technology Network with Over 50 Years of History

The Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association was founded on December 11, 1971, in Washington, D.C., when 69 Korean scientists and engineers gathered to establish the organization. The first president was Dr. Soon Kyung Kim, and the association was created to serve as a bridge connecting scientific and technological development between Korea and the United States.

Today, KSEA has grown into the largest Korean-American science and technology

organization in North America, with approximately 30,000 registered members and more than 7,000 active members. The 54th leadership team has been serving its term from July 2025 to June 2026.

Over the past five decades, KSEA has played a significant role in promoting scientific and technological collaboration between Korea and the United States while also expanding interest in science and technology within the Korean-American community. The organization has particularly focused on mentoring and supporting students and young researchers pursuing careers in science and engineering.

Professor Ohbong Kwon, who attended the event from New York, shared future plans for youth outreach.“We plan to focus more on nurturing young talents by organizing competitions and educational events for students in Nevada,” he said.

A Nationwide Network Across the United States

KSEA currently operates approximately 70 local chapters across the United States, along with 22 collegiate chapters and 33 affiliated professional societies related to science and technology.

One of the association’s flagship events is the annual US-Korea Conference on Science, Technology and Entrepreneurs (UKC). The conference brings together more than 1,000 participants each year—including leaders from academia, industry, government, and research institutions—to present research, engage in discussions, and participate in networking opportunities.

The 2025 conference, held in Atlanta, attracted more than 1,200 participants. The next conference, UKC 2026, is scheduled to take place from August 5 to 11, 2026, in Orlando.

With the launch of the Nevada Chapter, KSEA’s network continues to expand, strengthening collaboration among Korean-American scientists and engineers while creating new opportunities for innovation, mentorship, and global scientific exchange.
