오는 9월 19일, 세계적인 관광도시 라스베이거스에서 한국의 아름다운 전통과 시니어들의 당당한 도전이 하나의 무대 위에서 펼쳐진다. KAMA USA 시니어 모델협회(회장 박영미)가 주최하는 'The Royal Hanbok Show'가 바로 그 주인공이다.

이번 행사는 단순한 패션쇼를 넘어 한국의 전통 궁중한복을 세계에 소개하고, 나이를 뛰어넘어 새로운 꿈을 향해 도전하는 시니어들의 열정과 품격을 함께 선보이는 문화 축제로 기대를 모으고 있다.

KAMA USA 시니어 모델협회는 미국에서도 보기 드문 시니어 전문 모델 단체다. 현재 50세부터 86세까지 남성 10명, 여성 60명 등 총 70명의 회원이 활동하고 있으며, 매주 토요일 정기 워킹 수업을 비롯해 다양한 문화·예술 프로그램에 참여하며 전문 모델로 성장하고 있다. 새로운 회원들은 매년 공개 오디션을 통해 선발된다.

협회의 활동은 런웨이에만 머물지 않는다. 회원들은 함께 여행을 떠나고, 사진 촬영과 댄스 클래스, 바자회, 야외 피크닉 등 다양한 프로그램을 통해 건강하고 활기찬 시니어 문화를 만들어가고 있다. 모델 활동은 물론 삶의 즐거움과 공동체의 가치를 함께 나누는 것이 KAMA가 추구하는 또 하나의 목표다.

KAMA의 첫 패션쇼는 2023년 LA 코리아타운 플라자에서 시작됐다. 입점 의류업체들의 협찬으로 마련된 첫 무대를 계기로 협회는 다양한 패션쇼를 직접 기획하며 시니어 모델들에게 전문적인 무대 경험을 제공해 왔다. 이후 미국 주류 사회의 패션 행사에도 꾸준히 참여하며 활동 영역을 넓혀가고 있다.

특히 KAMA가 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 한국 문화를 세계에 알리는 일이다. 연간 패션쇼의 절반은 현대 디자이너 의상을, 나머지 절반은 조선시대 궁중한복을 중심으로 구성해 한국 전통의 아름다움을 미국 사회에 자연스럽게 소개하고 있다. 이번 라스베이거스 공연을 위해서도 궁중의상을 새롭게 제작했으며, 의상의 명칭과 디자인까지 역사적 고증을 거쳐 완성도를 높였다. 전통의 아름다움과 문화적 가치를 더욱 깊이 있게 전달하기 위한 노력이다.

협회의 최근 행보도 눈에 띈다. 지난 3월 LA 패션위크에서는 31명의 시니어 모델들이 세계적인 디자이너들의 의상을 입고 런웨이에 올라 관객들의 큰 박수를 받았다. 이어 5월 열린 제7회 어버이 효잔치에서는 궁중한복 패션쇼를 선보이며 많은 어르신들에게 감동을 전했다. 이와 함께 정기 오디션과 기금 마련 바자회를 통해 새로운 시니어 모델을 발굴하고 지역사회 봉사 활동도 꾸준히 이어가고 있다.

박영미 회장은 이번 행사의 의미를 이렇게 전했다.

“The Royal Hanbok Show'는 단순한 패션쇼가 아닙니다. 한국의 전통문화와 시니어들의 아름다운 도전을 세계인에게 소개하는 문화의 장입니다. 국제도시 라스베이거스에서 한복의 아름다움과 한국 문화의 품격을 널리 알리는 뜻깊은 무대가 되기를 바랍니다.”

KAMA USA 시니어 모델협회는 앞으로도 한국 전통문화를 세계에 알리는 다양한 프로젝트를 이어갈 계획이다. 현재 2027년 봄 LA 산타모니카대학교와 함께 'Korean Culture Night' 개최를 준비하고 있으며, 패션과 문화를 통해 세대를 잇고 한국의 아름다움을 세계와 나누는 여정을 계속해 나갈 예정이다.

나이는 숫자에 불과하다는 말처럼, KAMA USA 시니어 모델협회는 런웨이 위에서 인생의 또 다른 전성기를 써 내려가고 있다. 그리고 그 아름다운 발걸음은 한복과 함께 한국 문화를 세계로 이어가는 새로운 문화 외교의 길이 되고 있다.

On September 19, KAMA USA Senior Model Association, led by President Youngmi Park, will present The Royal Hanbok Show in Las Vegas. The event will celebrate the beauty of Korea's royal hanbok while showcasing the confidence, elegance, and passion of senior models.

KAMA USA is one of the few organizations in the world dedicated exclusively to senior models. Its 70 members, ranging in age from 50 to 86, participate in weekly runway training and a variety of cultural and community activities that promote active and meaningful lifestyles. New members are selected each year through public auditions.

Since its first fashion show at Korea Town Plaza in Los Angeles in 2023, KAMA has organized numerous runway events and expanded its presence by participating in mainstream American fashion shows. Beyond fashion, the association is committed to promoting Korean culture through its performances.

About half of KAMA's annual shows feature contemporary designer collections, while the other half highlight the elegance of royal court hanbok from Korea's Joseon Dynasty. For the Las Vegas event, newly created royal costumes have been carefully designed based on historical research to reflect the authenticity and beauty of traditional Korean attire.

The association has continued to gain recognition through recent appearances, including LA Fashion Week in March and the 7th Parents' Appreciation Celebration in May, where its royal hanbok presentation received warm praise from audiences.

"The Royal Hanbok Show is more than a fashion show," said President Youngmi Park. "It is a celebration of Korean culture and an opportunity to share the beauty of hanbok and the inspiring spirit of senior models with an international audience."

Looking ahead, KAMA USA Senior Model Association is also preparing Korean Culture Night in partnership with Santa Monica College in the spring of 2027, continuing its mission to promote Korean culture through fashion and cultural exchange.
