Toward a Better Life and a Better Nevada
- An Interview with Governor Joe Lombardo

As Nevada continues to grow and evolve, Governor Joe Lombardo has emphasized key priorities, including easing housing costs, expanding educational investment, strengthening the economy, and fostering partnerships with the Asian American community. As Las Vegas continues to expand and the Korean American community plays an increasingly important role, K-LasVegas spoke with Governor Lombardo about his vision for Nevada’s future, the changes residents can expect, and opportunities to strengthen collaboration with Korean Americans and the broader Asian American community.
Q: Nevada has experienced significant growth, while many residents continue to face rising housing costs, rents, and other living expenses. What specific steps would you take as governor to make Nevada more affordable for working families, seniors, and first-time homebuyers?
A: My priority as governor is to make Nevada a place where hardworking families can get ahead, and that starts with being able to afford a home. A growing economy means more opportunity, but we also need housing that keeps pace with that growth. That’s why I championed AB 540, which created the Nevada Attainable Housing Account and recognizes the housing needs of families earning up to 150% of area median income. This $183 million investment is designed to leverage more than $1 billion in housing opportunities, helping nurses, firefighters, electricians, and other essential workers afford to live in the communities they serve.
We’re pairing that investment with a pro-growth approach that cuts red tape, supports workforce training, and makes it easier to build more homes. Expanding supply is essential to bringing housing costs down and giving families more options, whether they’re renting, buying their first home, or looking for room to grow.
We are driving the economy to greater heights and creating an environment for success. We are number 1 in job growth, number 1 in small business growth, and number 1 in wage growth.
We’ve made real progress, but there is more work to do. I’ll keep pushing to build more housing, strengthen our economy, and hold the line on taxes so Nevadans can keep more of what they earn and build a future here.
Q: Nevada’s future depends heavily on the quality of its education system. What do you believe are the most important education challenges facing Nevada today, and what specific actions would you take to improve opportunities and outcomes for students?
A: I’ve always set out to be known as the Education Governor. Over the last three and a half years, we made the largest education investment in Nevada history, raised teacher pay, and expanded school choice. Through SB 460 and AB 330, we paired those investments with reforms to strengthen accountability, expand educational opportunities, and improve school safety. Our students deserve resources and results.
We’re seeing progress. Statewide graduation rates are up and more than 28% of Nevada public schools improved their ratings in the most recent academic year. We’re also helping recruit and retain good teachers through increased pay and scholarships, while investing in early literacy, pre-K, facilities, technology, and support for students who need additional help.
In a second term, my focus will be on getting more qualified teachers into classrooms, improving reading and math achievement, and ensuring our accountability measures deliver results. I’ll also keep fighting to give parents more choices, including expanding Opportunity Scholarships and implementing the federal tax credit scholarship program scheduled to begin in January 2027.
For me, success means every child has a strong start, a good teacher, a safe place to learn, and the opportunity to build a successful future here in Nevada.
Q: Nevada’s Asian American population continues to grow, and Korean Americans are an increasingly active part of the state’s business, cultural, and civic communities. How would your administration engage with Asian American and Korean American communities, and what role do you believe these communities should play in Nevada’s future?
A: Nevada’s Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, including our growing Korean American community, are an important part of our state’s story and its future. They are entrepreneurs, teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, veterans, and community leaders. I’m proud to have launched our AAPI coalition and earned the endorsement of the Asian Chamber of Commerce. Those relationships reflect a commitment to listening and working together. My administration will continue engaging with business owners, cultural organizations, faith leaders, and families to understand their priorities and help address the challenges they face, from growing a business to finding an affordable home and getting their children a quality education.
The opportunity to build a life in Nevada is something I understand personally. I was born into a military family in Japan, and my dad was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. Las Vegas became our home. I attended Rancho High School and UNLV, served in the military, joined Metro, became Sheriff, and eventually had the privilege of becoming Governor. Nevada gave my family the opportunity to put down roots and build a future. I want that same opportunity available to every family who calls our state home.
Q: Looking ahead to the next two years, what is the single most important change you would like Nevada residents to see under your administration, and how would you measure whether you have achieved it?
A: One of the important changes I want Nevadans to see over the next two years is that their hard work and paycheck goes further. That means continuing our pro-growth approach: attracting new businesses, diversifying our economy, investing in workforce training, expanding housing availability, and strengthening our infrastructure. Keeping Nevada competitive helps create opportunities for the people who already live and work here.
I would measure success by whether wages are keeping pace with everyday costs, more Nevadans are finding good-paying jobs, and housing is becoming more affordable. My goal is to make Nevada the best place to work, live, and raise a family.
