“Beyond Division, Toward Action: A New Vision for Public Safety, Education, Housing, and the Economy”

네바다 지역 사회가 주거비 상승, 교육 문제, 그리고 정치적 분열이라는 과제에 직면한 가운데, 마이클 겅(Mike Kung)은 ‘행동하는 리더십’을 내세우며 서머린 제2선거구 주의원 선거에 출마했다. FBI 출신인 그는 공공 안전 경험을 바탕으로, 다음 세대를 위한 더 나은 지역 사회를 만들겠다는 의지를 강조한다. 본 매거진의 표지를 장식했었던 그는 특유의 부드러움과 섬세함으로 아시안 커뮤니티에 대해 상당한 친화력을 보여왔다. 그의 부모님은 화교 출신으로 한국어에도 능통하다. 

어린 시절부터 이민자인 소상공인의 애환을 깊이 체험한 그는 가족에 대한 사랑이 남다르며, 이러한 기본적 신뢰와 책임감이 정치 활동의 근간이 된다고 역설한다. 자녀에게 정의로운 삶에 대해 몸소 실천하고자 하는 그의 진정성을 담아 인터뷰를 나눠 보았다. 

Q: 이번 주 의회 선거에 출마하게 된 동기는 무엇입니까?

A: 예전에는 부모님께 동기부여를 받았지만, 이제는 아이들에게서 동기부여를 받습니다. 저는 아이들에게 세상이 이렇게 분열되어서는 안 된다고 말합니다. 우리는 너무 심하게 분열되어 있어요. 예전에는 아이들과 '폭스 뉴스냐 CNN이냐'라는 게임을 하곤 했습니다. 제가 헤드라인을 읽어주면 아이들은 폭스 뉴스인지 CNN인지 맞춰야 했죠. 6살짜리 아이도 이해할 수 있는 게임이었어요. 그러고 나서 극단적인 언론에 대해 이야기를 나누곤 했습니다. 이제 FBI에서 은퇴했으니, 말로만 하지 말고 행동으로 보여줘야겠다고 생각했습니다. 아이들에게 나이와 상관없이, 혼자일지라도 더 나은 세상을 만들기 위해 노력할 수 있다는 것을 알려주고 싶습니다. 항상 성공하는 건 아니겠지만, 절대 포기해서는 안 된다는 것을요.

Q: 후보께서 대표하시는 정확한 지역구를 말씀해 주시고, 해당 지역 사회가 직면한 가장 시급하고 취약한 문제는 무엇이라고 생각하시는지 알려주시겠습니까?

A: 저는 서머린 지역의 상당 부분을 차지하는 제2선거구에 출마합니다. 북쪽 경계는 서머린 파크웨이, 남쪽은 플라밍고, 동쪽은 후알라파이와 퀸즈리지입니다. 주의원으로서 저는 모든 네바다 주민을 대표할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 제가 우선적으로 추진할 정책은 공공 안전, 더 나은 교육, 재정적 책임(세금을 현명하게 사용), 저렴한 의료 서비스, 그리고 소기업 지원입니다.

Q: 후보는 노동자 계층의 주민들이 일상적으로 겪는 어려움을 해결하는 데 깊은 관심을 갖고 계신 것 같습니다. 라스베이거스에서는 임금이 정체된 반면 생활비는 계속 상승하면서 많은 사람들이 재정적으로 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 이들을 지원하기 위한 구체적인 방안을 제안해 주시겠습니까?

A: 네바다 주민들에게 주택 비용은 가장 큰 지출 항목입니다. 연방 정부가 금리를 담당하는 반면, 주 의회는 토지 이용 및 개발 인센티브에 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 주 정부는 건설업체와 긴밀히 협력하여 저렴한 주택을 공급하고 새로운 거주자들을 위한 기반 시설을 확충해야 합니다. 또한, 기업 독점이 주택 시장 가격에 영향을 미치지 못하도록 막아야 합니다.

Q: 라스베이거스의 전반적인 교육 수준이 여전히 우려스러운 부분이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 공립 교육기관들이 지원을 제공한다고 하지만, 많은 사람들은 여전히 ​​부족하다고 생각합니다. 학교 폭력을 포함한 학교 안전 문제와 지속적인 교사 부족 문제 등을 해결하기 위한 구체적인 계획을 수립하고 계십니까?

A: 제 아내는 교사이고 저도 아이들이 학교에 다니고 있어서 학교 관련 문제는 저에게 매우 중요합니다. 안전이 확보되지 않으면 교사는 가르칠 수 없고 학생은 배울 수 없습니다. 적절한 교사 대 학생 비율이 유지되도록 노력해야 합니다. 비상 경보 장치 같은 것도 누구나 쉽게 이용할 수 있어야 합니다. 저는 민간 부문과 지역 경찰 간의 협력을 강화할 계획입니다. 라스베이거스 메트로 경찰서는 섬머린 지역에서 매달 첫째 주 화요일에 지역 사회와 소통하는 행사를 개최하는데, 많은 사람들이 이 행사에 대해 잘 모릅니다. 지역 경찰관들이 학교 운영팀에 참여하면 현장에서 목격한 상황을 학부모와 교사들에게 직접 알릴 수 있을 것입니다. 재정 부족으로 인한 교사 부족 현상은 절대 발생해서는 안 됩니다. 우리는 재정 수입을 안정화하기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 비상 자금 확보부터 건설업체가 주택을 짓는 지역 사회에 필요한 기반 시설 지원에 참여하도록 하는 것까지 모든 것을 검토해야 합니다.

Q: 현재의 경기 침체로 인해 소규모 사업체들이 점점 더 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 많은 사업체가 문을 닫고 있습니다. 귀하의 경험을 바탕으로 지역 소규모 사업자들을 지원하기 위해 어떤 구체적인 정책이나 계획을 도입하시겠습니까?

A: 높은 금리, 인건비, 임대료 상승으로 중소기업 운영이 더욱 어려워지고 있습니다. 다양한 세금 감면 방안을 검토하고, 중소기업의 현대화 및 효율성 향상을 지원하기 위해 중소기업청(SBA)의 지원 범위를 확대해야 합니다. 또한 경제적으로 어려운 시기에는 네바다주 중소기업 신용 지원 프로그램을 확대하여 중소기업들이 단기 자금 대출을 이용할 수 있도록 해야 합니다.

Amid rising housing costs, ongoing challenges in education, and increasing political polarization in Nevada, Mike Kung is running for the State Assembly in District 2 of Summerlin, emphasizing a “leadership through action” approach. A former FBI professional, he highlights his background in public safety as the foundation for his commitment to building a better community for future generations.

Having previously been featured on the cover of this magazine, he has demonstrated a natural affinity toward Asian communities through his gentle demeanor and attentiveness. With parents of Chinese descent and fluency in Korean, he reflects a multicultural background that informs his perspective.

From an early age, he has deeply experienced the challenges faced by immigrant small business families. His strong devotion to family and sense of responsibility serve as the core principles guiding his political career. With a desire to model a life grounded in justice for his children, we sat down with him for an interview to explore his vision and sincerity.

Q: What motivated you to run in this State Assembly election?

A: I used to be motivated by my parents and now I’m motivated by my kids.  I tell my kids that the world shouldn’t be this way.  We are much too divided.  I used to play a game with my kids called.  Fox or CNN.  I would read a headline and they would have to guess if it was Fox or CNN.  Even a 6 year old understands.  We would then talk about the extremes.  Now that I’m retired from the FBI, I have to put my money where my mouth is. I want my kids to know that no matter what age you are at, or  even if you are alone  you can always try to make change for the better.  You won’t always succeed, but you should never quit.

Q: Could you specify the exact district you are representing, and what you consider to be the most pressing and vulnerable issue facing that community?

A: I am running for District 2,  which is a large part of Summerlin, essentially the north boundary is summerlin parkway, the south is Flamingo, the east is Hualapai plus Queensridge.  As an Assembly person, I feel I would be representing all Nevadans.  My priorities would be public safety, better education, fiscal responsibility (using tax dollars wisely), affordable healthcare and support for small businesses

Q: It appears that you are deeply committed to addressing the everyday challenges faced by working-class residents. In Las Vegas, many are struggling financially as wages have stagnated while the cost of living continues to rise. What concrete measures do you propose to support them?

A: Housing is the single largest expense for Nevadans. While the federal government handles interest rates, the State Assembly can affect land use and development incentives.  The state government needs to work hand in hand with builders to help provide affordable housing   and ensure the infrastructure is also there to support the new residents.  Additionally, we need to work to ensure that corporate monopolies are not able to affect housing market prices.

Q: I understand that the overall level of education in Las Vegas remains a concern. While public institutions claim to provide support, many believe it is still insufficient. Are you developing specific plans to address issues such as school safety, including violence, and the ongoing shortage of teachers?

A: My wife is a teacher and I have kids in school, so all issues related to schools are of great importance to me.  Without safety teachers cannot teach and students cannot learn. We need to work to make sure the proper student to teacher ratios are followed.  Things like panic alarms should be accessible.  I plan on encouraging more engagement between the private sector and local enforcement. In Summerlin, Las Vegas Metro has a monthly “First Tuesday” event to connect with the community.  Many people do not know about this. It would also be fantastic to get local officers to participate in the School Operational Teams, that way officers can directly let parents and teachers know what they are seeing on the streets.  Regarding the shortage of teachers due to funding, that should never be the case.  We need to work to stabilize the revenue stream.  We need to look at everything from rainy day funds to ensuring that builders are helping to support the needed infrastructure in the communities they are building homes in. 

Q: Given the current economic downturn, small businesses are facing increasing difficulties, with many forced to close. Drawing from your own experience, what specific policies or initiatives would you introduce to support local small business owners?  

A: Higher interest rates, labor costs and rents are making it harder for small businesses.  We need to look at variations of tax alleviation, expanding the outreach of the SBA to work with small businesses to modernize, become more efficient.  In economic hard times we also need to look at expanding the Nevada State Small Business Credit Initiative so small businesses have access to small bridge loans.
