The Girls Who Carry Gratitude in Their Hearts

한국 전쟁을 기념하는 행사에서 한복을 곱게 입은 예쁜 소녀들을 만났다. 여러 명의 소녀들이 하늘하늘한 한복을 휘날리며 천진난만하게 뛰어다니는 그 모습이 저절로 미소를 짓게 했다. 그 소녀들이 누구인지 무척 궁금해졌다. 그래서 다짜고짜 그 소녀들을 불러 세우고는 궁금증을 풀어냈다.

 ‘품앗이운동본부’... 그 소녀들이 활동하는 단체이다. 1998년부터 시작된 H2O품앗이운동본부는 한국의 미풍양속인 품앗이정신을 이어받아 청소년 건전 육성 도모를 목표로 한다. 이 단체를 이끄는 김한종 사무총장은 “저희 본부는 세계화를 바탕으로해서 한국의 정신 K-spirit을 알리고, 세계 평화에 기여하고자 하는 비영리 법인입니다. 국내에서는 품앗이 캠프와 학교, 국회동심한마당, 예술 전시 등의 활동을 하며, 국제 나눔으로는 6.25 UN 참전용사 감사편지를 나누고 직접 참전국을 방문합니다. 이번에 청소년을 이끌고 미국 도시를 돌며 참전국 방문 프로젝트를 진행하고 있습니다.”라고 설명하며, “이번 라스베이거스에서 열린 한국 전쟁 75주년 기념식에 참석하고자 이 곳을 방문하게 되어 매우 뜻깊게 생각합니다.”라고 소감을 말했다. 

베가스를 방문한 소녀들은 한국 전쟁에 참가한 용사들을 방문하고 그들에게 감사함의 마음을 전달했다. 특히 이번에 선발된 청소년들은 한국전 참전용사에게 보내는 감사편지쓰기 공모전에서 선발되었다. K-LasVegas 매거진의 표지로 선정된 나혜령 양은 감사편지 쓰기 공모전에서 초등부 대상을 수상했고, 현재 Hprep ACADEMY에 재학중이며, 이마린 양은 중등부 최우수상을 수상했고, 현재 부산 초읍 중학교에 재학중이다. 

이 소녀들의 감동어린 감사 편지를 소개한다. 

<나혜령>

 2022년 러시아, 우크라이나 전쟁이 시작되었을 때, 그 나라 사람들의 고통을 마음으로 공감하려고 노력했지만 결국 저는 안타깝게 느끼는 것에 그치는 제3의 관찰자의  위치에서 머물고 있는 저 자신을 발견했습니다. 

그러면서 70년 전 당시 이름도 생소한 낯선 한국 땅에 제3의 관찰자의 위치를 벗어던지고 직접 참여자로서 한국을 돕기 위해 목숨을 걸고 찾아온 참전용사분들에 대해 관심을 가지게 되었습니다.

한국 전쟁은 미국뿐만 아니라 한국 젊은이들에게는 잊혀진 전쟁이 되어 가고 있습니다. 목숨을 걸고 뛰어든 참전용사분들 입장에서는 속상할 수도 있는데, 저희들의 작은 감사에 크게 좋아하시고 심지어 우시기도 하셨습니다.

이번 미국여행을 통해 저희들의 어찌보면 70년이 지나 늦고 작은 감사가 참전용사분들에게는 가장 최신이고 거대하게 느껴졌기 때문이고, 이는 관찰자가 아닌 그 시대에 직접 참여했던 분들만이 느낄 수 있는 기분이기 때문입니다.

우린 다른 시대을 살아왔지만, 지금 감사의 순간만은 같은 시대를 함께하는 최고의 친구라고 느꼈습니다.

"무기여 잘 있거라"라는 책을 읽으며 참전 용사들과 그 가족들에게 얼마나 끔찍하고 힘겨운 시간이었을지 생각해 보았습니다. 그러다 학생으로서 평화를 유지하기 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을지 생각하게 되었습니다.

한국전쟁은 저에게는 책 속의 이야기일 뿐이었지만, 푸마시 덕분에 참전 용사들을 직접 만나 그들의 이야기를 들을 수 있는 기회가 주어졌고, 저는 그 기회를 받아들이기로 했습니다. 그 모든 분들이 가장 암울했던 시기에 한국을 기꺼이 도왔다는 사실이 정말 놀랍습니다.

또한, 용감하게 한국을 지지해 주신 참전 용사들과 그 가족분들께 마땅히 드려야 할 감사의 말씀을 전할 수 있어서 기뻤습니다. 마지막으로, 모든 참전 용사들이 이미 우리 역사의 일부이며 결코 잊혀지지 않을 것임을 기억해 주시기를 바랍니다.

At a memorial event for the Korean War, I came across some beautiful young girls dressed gracefully in hanbok. Watching several of them run around playfully, their delicate hanbok flowing in the breeze, naturally brought a smile to my face. I became very curious about who these girls were. So, without hesitation, I called them over and satisfied my curiosity.

They are part of an organization called the Pumasi Movement Headquarters. Established in 1998, the H2O Pumasi Movement Headquarters aims to foster the healthy development of youth by carrying on the traditional Korean spirit of pumasi—a culture of mutual aid.

Kim Han-jong, the Secretary-General of the organization, explained, “Our headquarters is a nonprofit foundation that seeks to spread the spirit of Korea—what we call K-spirit—on a global scale and contribute to world peace. In Korea, we run activities such as Pumasi Camps, Pumasi Schools, the National Assembly Children's Festival, and various art exhibitions. Internationally, we share thank-you letters with Korean War UN veterans and visit countries that sent troops during the war. This time, we are leading a youth delegation to several American cities as part of our veterans visit project.”

He added, “We feel deeply honored to have come here to attend the Korean War 75th Anniversary Commemoration held in Las Vegas.”

The girls who visited Las Vegas met with Korean War veterans and conveyed their heartfelt gratitude. The students selected for this trip were winners of a thank-you letter writing contest dedicated to Korean War veterans.

Na Hye-ryeong, featured on the cover of K-LasVegas magazine, won the grand prize in the elementary school division. She is currently attending Hprep Academy. Lee Ma-rin, who won the top award in the middle school division, currently attends Choeup Middle School in Busan. When the war between Russia and Ukraine began in 2022, I tried to empathize with the pain of the people in those countries. But in the end, I found myself merely feeling sympathy from a distance—as a third-party observer.

That realization led me to reflect on the Korean War 70 years ago, when unfamiliar foreign soldiers traveled to a then-unknown land called Korea, casting off their roles as distant observers to become active participants—risking their lives to help.

The Korean War is becoming a forgotten war, not only in the United States but even among many young Koreans. From the perspective of the veterans who risked everything, this may feel disheartening. Yet, they responded with immense warmth—even tears—to our small gestures of gratitude.

Through this trip to the U.S., I realized that while our thanks may seem small and long overdue—coming 70 years later—it felt incredibly fresh and meaningful to the veterans. This is something only those who lived through that era as participants can truly feel.

Though we come from different generations, in that moment of shared gratitude, I felt we were living at the same time—true friends across the years.

I read a book ”A farewell to arms” and thought about how dreadful and challenging it would have been for the veterans and their families. Then, I started thinking about what I could do as a student to sustain peace. The Korean war was only a story in the books for me, but pumassi gave me an opportunity to meet the veterans and to hear them in person, and I decided to take it. It is truly astonishing that all those people were willing to help Korea in the darkest time. Also, it was my pleasure delivering our thank you which the veterans who showed bravery and their family who showed support for Korea absolutely deserved. Lastly, I hope all the veterans would remember that they are already part of our history and will never be forgotten.
