"I didn’t even know what kind of country Korea was, but I gave eight years of my life!"

한국전쟁에 참가한 미군용사들은 다양한 분야에서 활약했다. 한인 커뮤니티 행사에 꾸준히 참가하고 있는 리 마워리(Lee A. Mowery)씨는 올해 나이 93세. 현존하는 용사들 중 상당한 

고령이다. 그는 1950년, 20살의 나이로 공군으로 참전해서 전쟁이 끝난 후에도 5년 이상을 주둔하며 휴전 이후 안보에도 참여했다.

한국전쟁 발발 당시 부산의 모든 공군 기지도 다 파괴되어 그가 속한 공군 기지는 일본 오키나와 쪽에 주둔했다. 그는 비행기를 수리하는 부서에서 일했다. 그는 “내가 파병됐을 당시에 나는 한국이 어디에 있는 나라인지도 모르고 갔어요. 한국전쟁의 참혹한 실상은 내가 직접 보지는 못했지만, 전우들을 통해 들을 수 있었죠. 나는 폭격기 부대에 속해 있었기 때문에 매일 밤 출격하는 B26 폭격기들을 수리하고 돌봐야 했어요.”라고 회상했다. 

그는 미국으로 돌아온 후에는 75세에 은퇴할 때까지 파이낸셜맨으로 왕성하게 활동했다. 75세가 되어 은퇴한 후 그는 한국전쟁참전용사협회인 KWVA에서 지금까지 활동해오고 있다. 베가스에서는 2012년부터 활동하며 볼더시티에 있는 국립묘지에 한국전쟁 기념비를 세우는 업적에도 참여했다. 그는 “KWVA 라스베가스 지부에는 이제 5명 정도만 남았어요. 너무 안타깝죠. KWVA는 참전용사들만의 모임이 아니기 때문에 한국 파병 베테랑도 참여할 수 있어요. 그들이 많이 참여해서 한국을 위해 목숨 바친 많은 용사들의 뒤를 이어 한국 안보의 정신을 이어나갔으면 좋겠습니다.”라고 당부했다. 

종종 ‘잊혀진 전쟁’으로도 불리는 한국전쟁 3년 동안 180만이 넘는 미군이 참전했고, 36,000명 이상이 전사했으며 부상자 약 103,000명, 그리고 아직도 7,600명은 실종 상태에 있다.

Korean War Veteran Lee A. Mowery, 93, Reflects on His Service and Legacy

Among the many American veterans who served during the Korean War, their contributions extended across diverse roles. One such veteran is Lee A. Mowery, a familiar face at Korean community events and a proud member of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA). Now 93 years old, he stands as one of the oldest surviving veterans of the conflict.

Mowery was only 20 years old when he joined the U.S. Air Force and was deployed to serve in the Korean War in 1950. Even after the armistice, he remained stationed in the region for over five years, continuing to support security efforts during the post-war years.

“At the time I was deployed, I didn’t even know where Korea was,” he recalled. “I didn’t witness the horrors of the war firsthand, but I heard about them from my fellow soldiers. I was part of a bomber squadron, responsible for maintaining the B-26 bombers that flew out each night.”

Due to the destruction of all air bases in Busan during the early days of the war, his unit was based in Okinawa, Japan. There, he worked in the aircraft maintenance division, ensuring the readiness of bombers that played a crucial role in nightly missions.

After returning to the U.S., Mowery led a successful career as a financial advisor until retiring at the age of 75. In retirement, he remained active in veteran affairs through the KWVA, and since 2012, he has been involved in the Las Vegas chapter. He also contributed to the installation of the Korean War Memorial at the national cemetery in 

Boulder City, Nevada.

“There are only about five of us left now in the KWVA Las Vegas chapter,” he lamented. “It’s heartbreaking. But KWVA is not only for those who fought in the Korean War. Veterans who served in Korea later on can also join. I hope more of them will participate and carry on the legacy of those who gave their lives for Korea.”

Often referred to as the "Forgotten War," the Korean War saw over 1.8 million American soldiers deployed over its three-year span. More than 36,000 were killed, around 103,000 wounded, and over 7,600 remain missing to this day.
