베가스 소녀의 ‘카네기 멜런’ 입성기

  “From Vegas to Carnegie Mellon: A Girl’s Journey”

카메라 앵글 속에는 어여쁜 아이돌 소녀가 서 있었다. 댄스와 음악을 좋아해서 아이돌 오디션까지 도전했던 한 소녀는 집념을 더 밀어붙였다면 지금쯤 K-POP 스타가 됐을지도 모른다. 하지만 그녀는 잠시의 도전을 뒤로 하고 학업에 전념하며 명문으로 알려진 카네기 멜런 대학교에 당당히 입성했다. 이 학교는 컴퓨터 공학과가 세계 1위이고, AI 시스템이 세계적 수준이며, 그녀가 선택한 건축과도 명성이 높다. 인터뷰 내내 그녀의 똑똑하고 빛나는 눈빛이 무척 예뻤다. 그녀의 어머니 한정원씨가 숨은 공신이다. 자율적인 교육 방식과 비전에 대한 열린 시각이 오늘의 쾌거를 이루어냈다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 낮은 저음으로 풀어나가는  논리적인 이야기 전개는 엄마와 딸이 똑같이 닮아 있었다. 

올 9월 카네기 멜론에 입학하는 유조안(Joanne Yoo)을 인터뷰했다.

1) 어떻게 대학교를 선택하게 되었나?

지원 과정을 거치면서 어떤 대학에 진학할 지 결정하는 데 어려움을 겪었고, 저에게 가장 잘 맞는 대학을 찾기 위해 거의 30곳에 가까운 대학에 지원했습니다. 지원 과정 중간에 경영학에서 건축학으로 전공을 바꾸기로 결정했습니다. 그 결과, 포트폴리오 작업에 2주 넘게 거의 잠을 자지 못했습니다. 카네기 대학교에 지원서를 보낼 때는 큰 결과를 기대하지 않았기 때문에 합격 통지서를 받고 완전히 충격을 받았습니다. 제 잠재력이 인정받은 것 같은 느낌이었습니다. 많은 동료들이 학업의 상당 부분을 관심 있는 분야에 쏟아붓는 만큼, 카네기 대학교에 진학하는 것은 제 실력이 뒤처질 수 있다는 것을 의미했습니다. 엄격한 교과 과정 외에도 피츠버그에서의 생활은 완전히 새로운 경험이었습니다. 하지만 부모님과 함께 캠퍼스를 방문했을 때, 캠퍼스의 다양한 기회와 환경에 감탄했습니다. 인생의 다음 장을 어떻게 보낼지 선택하는 것은 스트레스가 많은 결정이지만, 부모님의 지지 덕분에 카네기 멜런 대학교에 진학할 수 있었습니다.

2) 카네기 멜론 대학교에 대해 소개와 대학 진학을 준비하는 후배들에게 해줄 조언은?

카네기 멜런 대학교의 기원은 1900년 앤드류 카네기가 피츠버그에 기술학교를 설립하면서 시작됩니다. 이후 카네기 공과대학으로 발전했고, 1967년에는 멜론 공과대학과 합병하여 현재 카네기 멜런 대학교로 발전했습니다. 카네기 멜런 대학교는 매년 봄 축제에서 열리는 마차 경주, 학교 상징인 타탄 체크, 그리고 설립자의 스코틀랜드 혈통을 기념하는 파이프와 드럼 연주 등 독특한 전통을 자랑합니다.

대학 진학을 준비하는 신입생들에게 드리고 싶은 중요한 조언은 자신의 진솔하고 독특한 모습을 표현하는 것을 두려워하지 말라는 것입니다. 수천 개의 지원서 중에서 대학들은 기억에 남거나 특별한 지원서를 가장 먼저 알아볼 것입니다. CMU 보충 자료에 언급된 내용 중에는 부모님께서 차 안에서 가르쳐 주신 교훈, 오케스트라 동료들과의 경험, 그리고 발레를 통해 제 인격과 정직성을 강화했던 경험 등이 있습니다. 많은 3학년 학생들이 지원 과정에서 스트레스를 받을 수 있지만, 자존감을 잃거나 또래와 자신을 비교하지 않기를 바랍니다. 또한 각자 자신만의 이야기를 만들어가고 있다는 것을 기억하는 것도 중요합니다. 대학 진학을 준비하는 신입생들이 즐겁고 많은 것을 배울 수 있는 학교에 진학하기를 바랍니다.

3) 대학 입학 후 가장 기대되는 것은 무엇이며, 무엇을 하고 싶은가?

대학 생활에서 제가 기대하는 것 중 하나는 새로운 사람들을 만나고, 도시를 탐험하고, 전공 분야에서 기회를 찾는 것입니다. 카네기 멜런에는 400개가 넘는 학생 단체가 있으며, 학생들이 학교 간 협력할 수 있는 다양한 기회가 있습니다. 카네기 신입생을 위한 학생 오리엔테이션은 새로운 사람들을 만나고 같은 전공의 다른 학생들과 더 가까워질 수 있는 일주일 간의 기회입니다. 이번 학년도에 카네기에 입학하는 유학생들도 많습니다. 전 세계 친구들과 함께 일하는 것은 흥미로운 경험이 될 것이라고 생각하고, 다른 나라를 방문할 때는 안내해 줄 친구들도 있으면 좋겠습니다! 카네기에서 건축을 공부하는 학생들 중 많은 수가 2학년 이후 해외 유학을 결정합니다. 지난 여름 동안 저는 가족과 함께 파리, 바르셀로나, 베니스 등 유럽 여러 도시의 건축물을 둘러볼 기회를 가졌습니다. 해외 유학 프로그램을 통해 다양한 건축 양식을 배우고 특별한 경험을 만들어갈 수 있기를 기대합니다.

4) 전공과 관련하여 앞으로 어떤 진로를 꿈꾸는가?

학부 졸업 후, 대학원에 진학하거나 대기업에서 일하며 업계에 대해 더 깊이 알아보고 싶습니다. 건축학 학위를 취득하면 건축사 자격증을 취득할 계획입니다. 건축학을 공부하면 더 나은 진로를 찾을 수 있을 거라고 생각하지만, 여전히 사업에 관심이 있습니다. 언젠가는 제 회사나 사업을 시작하는 데 필요한 경험을 쌓고, 경영학 석사 학위를 취득할 수 있도록 공부하고 싶습니다.

건축과 사업을 병행하는 길을 가고 싶지만, 인생에는 예상치 못한 변화가 많습니다. 궁극적으로는 지역 사회에 도움이 되는 동시에 저와 제 사랑하는 사람들에게 기쁨을 가져다주는 진로를 찾고 싶습니다. 엄마의 말씀처럼, 아직 그런 진로는 만들어지지 않았을지도 모릅니다.

5) 인생에 대한 주요 비전을 설명해 주세요.

지금으로서는 제 인생에 대한 주요 비전은 최종 목표가 아니라 제 여정에 대한 비전입니다. 앞으로 겪게 될 모든 기쁨과 고난 속에서도 매 순간을 최대한 충만하게 살아가고자 합니다. 모든 성공과 실패를 더 나은 저 자신으로 성장하는 기회로 삼고 싶습니다. 지금은 아직 배워야 할 것이 많은 새내기이지만, 앞으로 저를 지지해 주시고 시간을 투자해 주신 모든 분들, 특히 가족분들께 보답할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 제 인생에 대한 주요 비전을 되돌아볼 때, 비록 작더라도 세상과 주변 사람들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 시간은 계속되고 삶은 계속되지만, 결국 제 삶을 되돌아보며 지금의 제가 된 것을 자랑스럽게 생각하고 싶습니다.

인터뷰 _ 제이스 이(Jace Lee)

1) How did you come to choose your university?

          During my application process, it was difficult for me to decide which school I wanted to attend, and I applied to almost 30 schools in hopes to find one that would best fit me.          In the middle of my application process, I also decided to switch my major from business administration to architecture. As a result, I spent over two weeks getting little to no sleep in order to work on my portfolio. When I sent my application to Carnegie, I wasn’t expecting a big result, so my acceptance letter left me in complete shock. It felt as though my potential was acknowledged. When my parents and I visited the campus, I was amazed by the opportunities and the environment found on campus. Choosing how to spend the next chapter of my life is a stressful decision, but having my parents support helped me commit to Carnegie Mellon University. 

2) Please tell us about Carnegie Mellon University and give us some advice for juniors preparing to enter university.

          The origin of Carnegie Mellon University begins in 1900 when Andrew Carnegie founded a technical school in Pittsburgh. The school later evolved into the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and in 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute to form what we now know as Carnegie Mellon University. 

          With that said, a key advice I would give to incoming seniors preparing for university is to not be afraid of expressing their true and unique selves. In a pile of thousands of applications, universities will most likely notice the ones that are memorable or out of the ordinary. Some topics mentioned in my supplementals for CMU included the lessons I was taught by my parents in the car, my experiences with peers in orchestra, and how ballet has strengthened my character and integrity. Many juniors may face doubt or become stressed during the application process, but I hope that they don’t lose their self-esteem or compare themselves to their peers. It is also important to remember that each person is creating their own story. 

3) What are you most looking forward to and what do you want to do after entering university?

          Some things I am looking forward to in university are meeting new people, exploring the city, and finding opportunities in my field of study. There are also many international students who will be attending Carnegie this upcoming school year. I think it would be an interesting experience to work with peers from all over the globe, and when I am visiting other countries, I would have some friends to show me around too! Many of the students studying architecture at Carnegie also decide to study abroad after their second year. The past few summers, I have had the opportunity to view architecture in cities in Europe with my family, such as Paris, Barcelona, and Venice. Through the study abroad program I look forward to studying the different styles of architecture and creating unique experiences. 

          It is my first time living for a long period of time away from my family, so I will have more responsibility in how I spend my day to day schedule. I have heard that the first few months of university can be stressful, so I’m hoping to get through the transition into college life smoothly. By entering into Pittsburgh by myself and making new friends, I look forward to discovering a different part of myself. 

4) What career path do you hope to pursue in the future related to your major?

          Following my undergraduate experience, I hope to either continue my studies in graduate school or learn more about the industry by working in major firms. Once I receive a degree in architecture, I will work towards becoming a licensed architect. I believe studying architecture will help create a more direct path for me, but I still have interest in business. One day, I hope to gain the experience needed to open my own firm or business, and possibly study to earn my masters degree in business administration. 

          Ultimately, I hope to pursue a career path that will be beneficial for the community, while also bringing joy to me and my loved ones. As my mom stated, that career path may not have been created yet.

5) Please describe your major vision for life.

As of now, my major vision for life isn‘t an end goal but more of a vision for my journey. I want to take each success and failure as an opportunity to grow into a better version of myself. Right now, I am still a new adult with many things to learn, but in the future I hope to be able to repay everyone who has supported me and invested their time in me, especially my family. When I view my major vision for life, I see that I have made a positive impact on the world and those around me, even if it's a small one. Time will continue and life goes on, but in the end I hope to look back at my life and be proud of the person I become.
