젊은 선율, 하나의 울림 – 한인음악협회 출범

"Young Melodies, One Harmony – The Inauguration of the Korean Musicians’  Association"

라스베이거스 한인커뮤니티 내에는 음악인들의 활약이 두드러진다. UNLV 음대를 중심으로 활동하는 젊은이들이 많기 때문이다. 하지만 베가스가 워낙 클래식 음악의 불모지이기 때문에 제대로 활동할 수 있는 무대가 부족하다. 각 교회나 단체의 행사에서 활동하는 경우가 많다. 

미국의 그 어떤 도시보다도 음악적 인재가 많은 베가스 한인 커뮤니티에서 이번에 한인음악협회가 결성된 것은 매우 고무적이다. 각계의 적극적인 지원이 이루어진다면 차세대 한인 학생들에게 고품격의 음악 환경을 만들어줄 수 있는 계기가 될 것으로 희망한다. 용기있게 출범하는 회원들과 인터뷰를 나눠보았다.

Q: 한인음악협회를 결성하게 된 이유

A: 저희가 한인음악협회를 결성하게 된 가장 큰 이유는, 라스베가스 교민 사회 안에서 음악을 통해 서로를 이어주고, 또 한국 음악의 아름다움을 널리 알리고 싶었기 때문입니다. 한국 음악가들이 미국 주류 사회에서 끼치는 영향이 꽤 큰편이고 실력도 인정을 받지만 여전히 마이너리티로 대우 받는 경우도 많이 보았습니다. 개인적으로 활동하는 훌륭한 한인 음악가들은 많았지만, 함께 힘을 모아 무대를 만들고 연대하며 저희의 목소리를 낼 수 있는 플랫폼이 필요하다는 생각을 자연스럽게 한 것 같습니다.. 그때 연주회를 위해 모인 한인 음악가 다섯명이 “이제는 협회가 필요하다”는 공감대를 공유하였고, 그 열정이 모여 오늘 이 자리까지 오게 되었습니다.

Q: 주요 멤버들의 앞으로의 협회 활동에 대한 기대

A: 저희 협회의 주요 멤버들은 성악가, 기악연주자, 합창 지휘자, 작곡가 등 다양한 음악적 배경을 가진 분들이에요. 각자의 재능을 나누면서, 함께 더 큰 무대를 만들어 가는 데에 기대가 큽니다. 특히 후배 세대들에게 음악 교육의 기회를 넓혀주고, 지역사회와 함께하는 공연을 통해 교민분들께 더 가까이 다가가고 싶다는 마음이 모두에게 있어요.

Q: 첫 공연의 취지와 내용

A: 이번 창단 공연은 단순히 음악회를 여는 것 이상의 의미가 있어요. “우리가 음악으로 모였다”라는 선언이자, 협회의 첫 발걸음을 음악으로 알리는 자리거든요. 프로그램도 한국 가곡, 합창, 기악 콰르텟과 오케스트라 연주 등 다양하게 준비해서, 교민 사회가 공감하고 즐길 수 있도록 구성했습니다. 관객분들이 음악을 통해 따뜻한 에너지와 자부심을 느끼셨으면 합니다.

Q: 앞으로의 활동 방향과 계획, 포부 등

A: 앞으로는 정기 연주회를 열고, 음악 교육 프로그램, 경연 등을 만들어 한인 음악인들이 음악적 역량을 더욱 발휘할 수 있도록 지원할 계획입니다. 그것을 위해 라스베가스 한인회를 포함한 여러 한인 단체들, 또 네바다의 주류 커뮤니티들과도 연결될 수 있는 다양한 무대를 기획해서 한국 음악의 매력을 더 널리 알리고 싶어요. 장기적으로는 이 협회가 단순한 모임을 넘어서, 라스베가스를 대표하는 문화예술 단체로 자리 잡는 것이 목표입니다. 무엇보다도, 음악이 교민 사회를 하나로 묶는 다리 역할을 할 수 있도록 꾸준히 노력하겠습니다.

The Las Vegas Korean community is home to a remarkable pool of musical talent, especially young artists from UNLV’s music program. Yet, as a city with limited classical music infrastructure, opportunities for performance have been scarce, often confined to church or community events. The founding of the Las Vegas Korean Music Association is therefore a significant step toward creating a higher-quality musical environment for the next generation of Korean students.

Why the Association Was Founded

“We wanted to connect the Korean community through music and share the beauty of Korean music more broadly,” explains the founders. While Korean musicians are recognized for their skill in the U.S., they often remain underrepresented. A group of five musicians performing together realized the need for a dedicated platform to collaborate, perform, and amplify their voices—leading to the formation of the association.

Expectations for Members’ Activities

The association brings together vocalists, instrumentalists, choir conductors, and composers. Members hope to share their talents, create larger performance opportunities, and provide educational programs for younger generations. Community concerts are also designed to bring the audience closer and foster engagement within the Korean community.

Purpose and Program of the First Concert

The inaugural concert is more than a musical event—it is a declaration: “We are united through music.” The program features Korean art songs, choir performances, instrumental quartets, and orchestral pieces, offering a rich and diverse experience for the community. The goal is to leave the audience with a sense of pride and warm energy.

Future Plans and Vision

The association plans to hold regular concerts, music education programs, and competitions to help Korean musicians develop their skills. Collaboration with the Las Vegas Korean Community Center and other local organizations, as well as outreach to Nevada’s broader community, will help promote Korean music more widely. Ultimately, the association aims to become a leading cultural and arts organization in Las Vegas, serving as a bridge to unite the Korean community through music.
