물 위에 피어난 꿈, O Show를 빛내는 한국인 아티스트 ‘홍연진’

“A Dream on Water: Yeonjin Hong, the Korean Star of the O Show”

그녀는 예뻤다. 중년 초반에 들어섰다고는 전혀 믿기지 않는 얼굴이었다. 따스한 초봄의 빛깔과 너무도 잘 어울리는 벨라지오 가든에서 만난 그녀는 활짝 핀 미소조차도 봄을 닮아 있었다. 

베가스 내에서는 가장 대표적인 퍼포먼스인 OShow 단원 중에 한국인이 있으리라고는 전혀 생각지 못했다. 그런데 그녀가 지난해 이맘 때쯤 한국 TV 프로그램인 유 키즈 온 더 블럭에 주인공으로 등장했다. 그녀는 세계적인 엔터테인먼트의 성지인 베가스에서 보기 드물게 성공한 쇼 아티스트로 소개되었다. 미국에 살고 있는 사람들도 놀라울 소식인데, 한국에서는 큰 화제가 되었다. 그렇게 그녀를 알게 되었다. 

“제가 꼭 4월의 표지가 되고 싶어요. 올해로 제가 태양의 서커스에 입단한 지 만 17년이 되었거든요. 지금까지 자랑스럽게 잘 버텨온 제 자신을 칭찬해주며 기념할 수 있어서 더 기뻐요!” 그녀의 밝은 웃음 소리가 어린 아이 같았다. 홍연진 아티스트는 한국의 싱크로나이즈 국가대표 출신이다. 그녀는 4살 때부터 수영과, 리듬체조, 피겨 등을 섭렵했다. 그녀의 어머니의 교육열이 남다른 덕분으로 그녀는 일찍 아티스트 스위밍의 길로 들어섰고 곧 유망주가 되었다. 화려한 선수 생활을 마감하고 나니 큰 벽이 그녀 앞에 다가왔다. “이 종목으로는 코치 외에는 딱히 할만한 직업이 없었어요. 저는 계속 이 운동을 하고 싶었지만 현실은 암담했죠. 그 때 비디오로 태양의 서커스를 만나게 되었어요. 화려한 쇼에서 활약하는 스위밍 아티스트들을 보니 가슴이 뛰었어요. 정말 충격이었죠.” 그녀는 이 때 캐나다 본사에 이력서를 보냈다. 수 개월을 기다리는 동안 베가스로 건너와 오쇼를 관람하며 그녀의 신념은 더 단단해졌다. 

드디어 합격 통지서를 받았다. 홍 아티스트는 2009년, 최초의 한국인 단원이 되었다. 그녀는 캐나다로 날아가서 잠시 훈련을 한 뒤 바로 벨라지오 호텔의 오쇼의 단원으로 투입됐다. 그렇게 17년이 흘러갔다. 그녀는 이제 베테랑급 퍼포머이자 아티스트 코치를 맡고 있다. 무대 뒤에 걸린 태극기를 자랑스러워하며 한국인의 끈기와 투지로 그녀는 세계적인 엔터테인먼트의 꽃으로 활짝 피었다. 

무대의 캄캄한 물 속이 두렵지 않냐는 물음에 그녀는 오히려 “저는 커튼이 열리기 전 물 속 어둠 속에 있을 때가 가장 편해요. 곧 만나게 될 관객들을 생각하면 흥분되기도 하고요. 처음 이 일을 시작할 때 물 속이 너무 어두워서 실수도 좀 했어요. 뇌진탕이라는 큰 부상도 있었죠. 그래서 단원들에게 무엇보다 안전의 중요성을 강조해요. 체력관리만 잘 하면 50세까지도 이 일을 할 수 있어요. 저는 코치 역할도 좋지만 싱크로나이즈 포퍼머 인생을 가장 사랑해요.” 자신의 일에 대해 자부심이 가득한 모습은 보는 사람에게도 감동이 있다. 그녀는 “함께 일하는 동료들이 거의 세계 대회에서 만나던 친구들이에요. 총 10국에서 온 그들과 함께 문화를 배우며 무대 뒤의 치열함을 승화시키고 있답니다. 이제 한국에서온 후배도 생겼어요. 이리영 아티스트는 2024년 파리 올림픽에 출전했던 국가대표 선수 출신입니다. 워낙 밝은 성격이어서 벌써 단원들에게 한국말을 가르치며 친해졌더라구요. 앞으로도 더 많은 파트에서 한국인들과 함께하면 좋겠습니다.”라고 말했다. 

그녀는 일상에선 바쁘게 아이들을 케어해야 하는 두 아이의 엄마다. 그녀의 어머니가 열정적인 서포터였던 것처럼 그녀도 아이들에게 열정이 많다. 남편과 팀을 이뤄 라이드를 해고 케어를 한다. 그리고 호텔로 출근을 한다. “아직도 무대에 서면 설레이고 관객을 만나는 순간이 너무 좋아요. 17년이란 세월이 언제 지나갔는지 모르겠어요. 긍정적인 사고를 꾸준히 유지하면 저도 50세까지는 거뜬히 이 일을 해낼 것 같아요. 능숙해지고 여유로워짐을 느끼는 순간을 저는 사랑해요. 많은 사람들을 만나는 직업이니만큼 다양한 사람들을 품어줄 수 있는 그런 아티스로 남고 싶습니다.” 

벨라지오 호텔을 나서며 문뜩 무대 위에서의 그녀를 보고 싶다는 마음이 들었다. 싱크로나이즈 팀 맨 앞 줄에서 활약하는 그녀를 발견하는 기쁨도 작지 않으리라.

She was beautiful—so much so that it was hard to believe she had already entered her early middle age. When I met her in the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, glowing in the warm colors of early spring, her bright smile seemed to bloom with the season itself.

I had never imagined that among the performers of the famous O—one of the most iconic performances in Las Vegas—there would be a Korean artist. Yet about a year ago she appeared as a featured guest on the Korean television program You Quiz on the Block, where she was introduced as a rare success story: a show artist who built an extraordinary career in Las Vegas, the global capital of entertainment. That was how I first learned about her.

“I really want to be the cover model for the April issue,” she said with a bright laugh. “This year marks my 17th anniversary since joining Cirque du Soleil. I’d love to celebrate and congratulate myself for everything I’ve achieved.”

Artist Yeonjin Hong is a former member of Korea’s national synchronized swimming team. From the age of four, she trained in swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, and figure skating. With strong support from her mother, she quickly became a promising artistic swimmer. But after her competitive career ended, the path forward felt uncertain.

“There weren’t many career options besides becoming a coach,” she recalled. “I wanted to keep doing what I loved, but reality felt discouraging.”

Then one day she discovered Cirque du Soleil through a video. Watching the swimming artists perform in the spectacular show made her heart race. She immediately sent her résumé to the company’s headquarters in Canada. While waiting for a response, she traveled to Las Vegas and watched O in person, strengthening her determination.

In 2009, Hong became the first Korean performer to join the production. After brief training in Canada, she was assigned to the show at the Bellagio. Seventeen years later, she is now a veteran performer and artist coach. Proudly pointing to the Korean flag backstage, she speaks of how Korean perseverance helped her thrive on one of the world’s greatest entertainment stages.

When asked if the darkness beneath the stage water frightens her, she smiled.“Actually, I feel most comfortable waiting in the darkness underwater before the curtain opens. Thinking about the audience excites me.”

In her early days, however, the deep darkness sometimes caused mistakes, and she once suffered a serious concussion. Since then, she has emphasized safety above all.

“As long as you take good care of your body, you can do this job until fifty. I enjoy coaching, but I truly love the life of a synchronized swimming performer.”

Her colleagues come from about ten different countries—many of them athletes she once met at international competitions. Recently another Korean performer joined the show: artist Lee Riyeong, a former national team member who competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics. With her bright personality, she quickly bonded with the cast and even began teaching them Korean.

Offstage, Hong is also a devoted mother of two. Just as her own mother once supported her dreams, she now pours her energy into raising her children while balancing her demanding career.

“Even now, stepping onto the stage still makes my heart flutter,” she said. “Seventeen years have passed so quickly. If I keep a positive mindset, I believe I can continue performing until I’m fifty. I love the feeling of becoming more skilled and more at ease. Because I meet so many people through my work, I hope to remain an artist who can embrace many different lives.”

As I left the Bellagio, a thought crossed my mind—I wanted to see her on stage. Spotting her at the front of the synchronized swimming team would surely be a special joy.
